Sinopse

Sir Thomas More (1478-1535), venerated in the Catholic Church as Saint Thomas More, was an English lawyer, judge, social philosopher, author, statesman, theologian, and noted Renaissance humanist. A Rosicrucian initiate, according to Italian scholars Paolo Rumor and Diego Marin, he was affiliated with one of the most powerful and secret initiatory organizations of all time.More served Henry VIII as Lord Chancellor from October 1529 to May 1532, and is best known for writing Utopia, published in 1516, considered the first Rosicrucian manifesto, a work describing the political system of an imaginary island state, in which many have seen anticipations of the basic principles of modern Freemasonry.Sir Thomas More's Lady Fortune, often called The Verses of Fortune, dating back to the early 16th century, is a philosophical dialogue dramatizing human struggle against the "allure of Fortune's fleeting goods". The dialogue depicts Lady Fortune and a wise interlocutor discussing how to achieve true "happiness" by choosing "happy Poverty" and focusing on what "nature can support", rather than being influenced by wealth and power. In the opinion of many historians and literary critics, this work was likely intended as a preface to an early English version of a book on lottery, with the aim of advising readers not to take games of chance too seriously. Instead, it is a work with profound philosophical, ethical, and initiatory meanings.

The history of the Spanish Peninsula is closely bound to that of the Moors. The term “Spain” was not in wide use until the region was united by the monarchs of Aragon and Castile, and the Moors called the lands they ruled in the Iberian Peninsula Al-Andalus, traditionally thought to be an Arabic transliteration of Vandal, the Germanic tribe which briefly ruled the region in the early fifth century. The English name Andalusia derives from the Spanish Andalucia, which is still used by Spain to name its southern region.
Not surprisingly, three religions attempting to coexist during medieval times resulted in nearly incessant conflicts, marked by high taxation, disparate societies, rigid cultural controls, and systemic violence. Despite the odds, these three religions managed to live in a state of quasi-acceptance and peace in most of the major cities in the Iberian Peninsula like Cordoba and Toledo, with sporadic warfare occurring on the borders between Al-Andalus and the Christian kingdoms near the Pyrenees Mountains. Muslims, Christians, and Jews would attempt to reorganize their societies several times over the centuries through warfare, always with Jews on the lower rungs and Christians and Muslims fighting it out above them.
Though it’s often forgotten today, the fighting that took place during the Reconquista was not originally driven by religion. Instead, the majority of the battles were fought by ambitious rulers who sought territorial expansion, like many other civilizations during the Middle Ages. In fact, the Reconquista would not gain its unique religious flavor until the 13th century, when the territories that would become Castile and Aragon drummed up religious fervor to achieve its aims and gained papal support from Rome.

The Saga of Erik the Red is one of the two important thirteenth-century accounts of the Norse explorations of Greenland and North America, along with The Saga of the Greenlanders. Containing fantastic anecdotes about ghostly visitations, wise women-seers, and one-legged native Unipeds, the saga is just as fascinating for what is clearly authentic history. It vividly relates the conflict between Christianity and the old Norse religion; the significant place of extraordinary women in Icelandic and Greenland culture; the frequent incursions of the Norsemen into Ireland and Scotland, lands really not at all far from the centers of Norse activity; and first contact with the native inhabitants of the Dawnlands of northeastern North America. Most absorbing are the clear embodiments of real human personalities in this historical saga: Leif Erikson and his lover, the renownedly intelligent Thorgunna who boldly renounced social convention; Gudrid the daughter of Thorbiorn, beautiful and of strong and influential character; Thioldhild, the wife of Erik the Red, who refused to have sex with him so long as he resisted Christianity; Thorbiorg, the eldritch “Little Sibyl,” who dispensed prophecies to the settlers of Greenland; and Thorhall, the fey, untameable hunter, who held fast to his god Thor the Red-Bearded even when it meant being severed from human society. This translation by Arthur Middleton Reeves is taken from a weighty compilation of texts related to the Norse explorations entitled The Norse Discoveries of America and including the translations and editing of fellow Norse scholars North Ludlow Beamish and Rasmus Björn Anderson. Fostering children is a way of providing a temporary family for children who cannot live with their own parents. Fostering can be a rewarding and challenging experience for both the foster carers and the children. There are many reasons why children may need foster care, such as abuse, neglect, family breakdown, illness, or disability.
Foster carers are people who have the skills, patience, and compassion to care for children who have experienced trauma and loss. They offer a safe and nurturing environment where children can heal and grow. Foster carers receive training, support, and financial assistance from the fostering agency or local authority that places the children with them.
They work as part of a team with social workers, therapists, teachers, and other professionals to meet the needs of the children. Foster carers can choose the type of fostering that suits them best, such as short-term, long-term, emergency, respite, or specialist fostering. They can also specify the age range and number of children they can care for.
Fostering is not a permanent arrangement, and the goal is usually to reunite the children with their birth families or find them an alternative permanent home. However, some foster carers may adopt the children they foster if that is in their best interest. Fostering can make a positive difference in the lives of children and foster carers alike.
Fostering children can have many benefits, such as making a positive difference in their lives, learning new skills and expanding your family. However, fostering children can also have many challenges, such as dealing with emotional and behavioural issues, coping with loss and attachment, and balancing your own needs and responsibilities.
If you are interested in fostering children, you should contact your local fostering agency or social services department to find out more about the process, the requirements and the support available.
