Beschreibung

Leviathan by Thomas Hobbes Leviathan or The Matter, Forme and Power of a Commonwealth Ecclesiasticall and Civil, commonly referred to as Leviathan, is a book written by Thomas Hobbes (1588–1679) and published in 1651 (revised Latin edition 1668). Its name derives from the biblical Leviathan. The work concerns the structure of society and legitimate government, and is regarded as one of the earliest and most influential examples of social contract theory.

Written during the English Civil War (1642–1651), it argues for a social contract and rule by an absolute sovereign. Hobbes wrote that civil war and the brute situation of a state of nature ("the war of all against all") could be avoided only by strong, undivided government.

Hobbes proceeds by defining terms clearly and unsentimentally. Good and evil are nothing more than terms used to denote an individual's appetites and desires, while these appetites and desires are nothing more than the tendency to move toward or away from an object. Hope is nothing more than an appetite for a thing combined with an opinion that it can be had.

He suggests that the dominant political theology of the time, Scholasticism, thrives on confused definitions of everyday words, such as incorporeal substance, which for Hobbes is a contradiction in terms.

Hobbes describes human psychology without any reference to the summum bonum, or greatest good, as previous thought had done. According to Hobbes, not only is the concept of a summum bonum superfluous, but given the variability of human desires, there could be no such thing.

Consequently, any political community that sought to provide the greatest good to its members would find itself driven by competing conceptions of that good with no way to decide among them. The result would be civil war.

In this comprehensive series, we delve into three distinct yet impactful health conditions that affect millions of individuals across the globe. Parkinson's Disease is a neurodegenerative disorder that primarily affects movement, leading to tremors, stiffness, and balance problems. This progressive condition challenges not only the individuals living with it but also their families and caregivers, requiring ongoing management and adjustment to daily life. By understanding the causes, symptoms, and current treatments available, we aim to shed light on this complex disease and offer strategies for living with it.
Next, we explore Sciatica, a condition caused by the compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve, which can result in sharp, radiating pain in the lower back and legs. Sciatica can be debilitating, often limiting mobility and affecting one's ability to perform routine tasks. We will examine its causes, the various forms it takes, and the most effective treatments, from physical therapy to medication, offering practical advice on managing the pain and improving quality of life.
Lastly, we address Shingles, a viral infection caused by the reactivation of the chickenpox virus. While commonly known for the painful rash it produces, shingles can also lead to severe nerve pain that persists long after the rash has healed, a condition known as postherpetic neuralgia. This book explores the risk factors, symptoms, and treatments available, along with preventive measures such as vaccination. By providing in-depth information, we aim to empower individuals to better understand and manage shingles, reducing its impact on their health and well-being.
Through these books, we seek to provide a detailed and compassionate approach to understanding these conditions.

All forms of recreational digital consumption—whether on smartphones, tablets, game consoles, or TVs—have skyrocketed in the younger generations. From the age of two, children in the West clock up more than 2.5 hours of screen time a day; by the time they reach thirteen, it's more than seven hours a day. Added up over the first eighteen years of life, this is the equivalent of almost thirty school years, or fifteen years of full-time employment.

Most media experts do not seem overly concerned about this situation: children are adaptable, they say, they are "digital natives," their brains have changed and screens make them smarter. But other specialists—including some pediatricians, psychiatrists, teachers, and speech therapists—dispute these claims, and many parents worry about the long-term consequences of their children's intensive exposure to screens.

Michel Desmurget, a leading neuroscientist, has carefully weighed up the scientific evidence concerning the impact of the digital activities of our children and adolescents, and his assessment does not make for happy listening: he shows that these activities have significant detrimental consequences in terms of the health, behavior, and intellectual abilities of young people, and strongly affect their academic outcomes.
