  On October 22, 1962, President John F. Kennedy gave a televised address informing the American public that the Soviet Union had installed missiles in Cuba. Kennedy announced a US naval blockade around the island to prevent further delivery of such weapons, essentially declaring that any missile launched from Cuba against the Western Hemisphere would be considered an attack by the Soviet Union, and would prompt a full US retaliatory response. Kennedy demanded the removal of the missiles from Cuba and warned of serious consequences if the Soviets did not comply.

  John Alexander Dowie

  John Alexander Dowie (1847-1907) was a Scottish evangelist and faith healer who came to San Francisco in 1888 and built up a following by performing faith healing across the state. Later, Dowie gained fame by renting property adjacent to the World's Fair in Chicago in 1893. There he staged elaborate "divine healings" in front of large audiences. 
  In 1900 he announced the founding the city of Zion, 40 miles from Chicago, where he owned all the property personally. He established a range of businesses and healing homes and a large tabernacle. Dowie was for total reliance on divine healing and against the use of all forms of medicine. Dowie was a forerunner of Pentecostalism, and many of his followers became influential figures in the early 20th century revival.

  On September 19, 1985, a US Senate hearing was instigated by the Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC)--founded by Tipper Gore, wife of Senator and later Vice President Al Gore; and Susan Baker, wife of Treasury Secretary James Baker--who wanted to introduce a parental warning system that would label all music albums containing alleged offensive material. The system was to include letters identifying the type of objectionable content to be found in each album (O for occult themes, S for sex, D for drugs, V for violence, etc.).
   
  
   
  Dee Snider, lead singer and primary songwriter for the rock band Twisted Sister, John Denver, and Frank Zappa all testified against censorship and the proposed warning system. Such a system was never implemented, but the result of the hearing brought about what was known as the "Parental Advisory: Explicit Content" label.
