This work spans the early explorations and the conflicts that shaped the American frontier, employing Roosevelt's characteristic vigor and eloquence. The book is anchored in a blend of personal anecdotes, detailed historical accounts, and a profound reflection on American identity during the late 19th century, set against the backdrop of manifest destiny and the ongoing struggle between civilization and wilderness. Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th President of the United States, was not only a statesman but also an ardent historian and naturalist. His passion for the outdoors and deep-seated belief in American exceptionalism propelled him to explore the themes of conquest and frontier life. Roosevelt's experiences as a rancher and author, coupled with his astute understanding of American history, enable him to synthesize complex narratives, shedding light on the social and political implications of westward expansion. "The Winning of the West" is an essential read for anyone interested in American history, providing readers with an authentic lens through which to view the spirit of the nation. Roosevelt's engaging prose and thoughtful analysis make it a valuable resource for historians, students, and general readers alike, inviting them to reflect on the formative moments of the American experience.

The story of the Black Death begins long before it reached the shores of Europe. At the heart of the devastation was a bacterium called Yersinia pestis, the microorganism responsible for one of the deadliest pandemics in human history. This pathogen is believed to have originated in the arid plains of Central Asia, where it lived in a natural reservoir within rodent populations, particularly marmots. These animals, though mostly isolated in remote areas, became the starting point for a chain of transmission that would eventually span continents.
Early outbreaks of plague-like illnesses were recorded in China and other parts of Asia as early as the 13th century, suggesting that the bacterium was already circulating in the region. However, it was the growing network of trade routes, especially the Silk Road, that allowed the disease to move rapidly from one community to another. Merchants, caravans, and travelers unknowingly carried infected fleas and rats from one trading hub to the next, creating a direct path for the disease to follow.
One of the most significant early episodes linked to the Black Death's arrival in Europe occurred during the Mongol siege of the Crimean city of Caffa (modern-day Feodosiya) in 1346. According to some historical accounts, the Mongols, after suffering an outbreak in their own ranks, used the infected corpses of their dead as biological weapons by catapulting them over the city walls. While the historical accuracy of this account is debated, it symbolizes the critical role Caffa played as a point of transmission. From this port city, fleeing Genoese merchants are believed to have carried the disease back to Italy by ship, bringing the plague directly into European trading centers.

An exploration of the history, mythology, and evidence of those who traveled to pre-Columbian America.   Native groups have lived in the Americas for more than 10,000 years, but the voyages of Columbus surely did not bring the first visitors. Uncharted covers a range of cultures who seemingly visited the Americas long before Columbus, including Egyptians, Greeks, Celts, Vikings, as well as various people from Asia; and one large Chinese group who likely settled in the Americas in 100 BC. Wallace-Murphy and Martin delve into a wealth of evidence and stories, from potential Roman and Phoenician shipwrecks off the coast of South America to Celtic and Norse exploration of North America.   How did the Knights Templar influence the discovery of the New World? How did the Vikings navigate their way? What do the Sinclair family, the Rosslyn Chapel, and two Venetian brothers have to do with the discovery of a new continent? With source materials dating back through millennia, including very recent finds, this book will present a side of history still so readily dismissed by some. Columbus should be remembered, but remembered for the conquering tyrant he was. These other groups did not come to conquer, but to trade, explore, and escape.
