Synopsis

This insightful 1925 book traces the evolution of what was called the "Negro Question" in America, specifically examining the role of South Carolina in shaping early policies and attitudes. It analyzes key debates and votes in the state legislature and Constitutional Convention regarding slavery and the slave trade. The book highlights influential figures like Calhoun who pushed the state towards staunch pro-slavery views, as well as dissenting voices warning of the dangers of rapid expansion of slave populations.

Though dense with detail at times, the book offers an illuminating window into the political and economic machinations that ensnared South Carolina and the South in systems of bondage. Overall it provides a thought-provoking perspective on the complex forces driving America's gravest moral failure.

The definitive account of Commando: A Boer Journal of the Anglo-Boer War, published word-for-word as Reitz first wrote it in the English translation; edited and annotated by historian and Anglo-Boer War expert, Professor Fransjohan Pretorius.
In 1899, Deneys Reitz, then aged seventeen, enlisted in the Boer army to fight the British. He had learnt to ride, shoot and swim almost as soon as he could walk. He made full use of these skills and the endurance he had acquired in the next three years of the war, during which he fought with the Boer commandos.
He was involved in major actions, like the battle of Spioen Kop, and he interacted with prolific political and military figures of the time, such as President Paul Kruger, Boer generals Piet Joubert, Louis Botha, Koos de la Rey, Christiaan Beyers, Jan Smuts and British commander Lord Kitchener. He even met the young Winston Churchill as a prisoner-of-war in Pretoria. Reitz forged a strong personal and political friendship with General Jan Smuts after the war, built on reciprocal respect.
Commando is more than a historical document; it is a literary masterpiece that transcends time.
With prose that captures both the brutality and the beauty of war, Reitz weaves a narrative that resonates with authenticity and passion.
As relevant today as when it was first penned, Commando has become a South African classic and stands as a testament to the indomitable human spirit.

A Natural Law Framework for Evangelicals Today
During a time when political conversations are marked by deep polarization and difficult decision-making, what resources do evangelicals have to think critically and theologically about public life?
For political theorists Bryan T. McGraw, Jesse Covington, and Micah Watson, a crucial resource is to be found in natural law, a rich tradition of Christian political thought often neglected by evangelicals. Grounded in the hope and realism of the gospel, their evangelical natural law theory is deep in moral conviction yet oriented toward practical political decision-making. Relevant to all dimensions of political life, they show how an evangelical natural law framework can speak into debates about the economy, family life and marriage, violence and war, and religious freedom.
Hopeful Realism is a generous guide for evangelicals concerned with bringing their theological commitments to bear on their political judgments. A volume that brings together robust theory with practical cases, Covington, McGraw, and Watson show how evangelicals can participate as evangelicals in a pluralistic, often polarized, democracy.

Greek mythology influences us today. For instance, did you know that the famous athletic brand Nike comes from the Greek goddess of victory?
Greek mythology has, without a doubt, some of the most well-known legends in the world. Like most people, the Olympians had their fair share of family drama. This audiobook pays strict attention to the genealogy of the Greek gods and the relationships they had with one another, whether they were good, bad, or incestuous.
These divine beings gifted humanity joy and despair, and the ancient peoples of Greece and other countries related their own world to the actions of the gods. However, the gods and Titans were all corporeal and capable of physical interaction with humanity. They were no different than the dirt on the ground or the clouds in the sky. They could be seen and touched—especially touched, given their numerous children produced from unions with gods and demi-gods alike.
The heavy amount of interaction that humans had with the gods and goddesses in Greek mythology allowed them to make sense of the world order in which they found themselves. It was a constant reminder that all beings in the heavens, earth, and below were all cogs of the same system. In this audiobook, you will discover:The intriguing relationships between gods, men, demi-gods, and monstersThe connection between divinity and weakness. Not only men make mistakes; even seemingly perfect beings screw up regularly. The importance of love as a guiding force of nature and life in generalA practical understanding of the motivations of both men and gods behind their less-than-honorable actionsHow hard work might end in tragedyThe importance of family in Greek mythologyAnd much more!

Much has been written about Western intervention during the breakup of Yugoslavia, and whether it made matters worse, prevented worse atrocities, or was simply ineffective. In early 1992, however, what was clear was that Europe was hopelessly divided over the best course of action to take towards Yugoslavia, and after several years of fighting, the Bosnian War was one of the most violent conflagrations in Europe since the end of World War II.
That war had been the byproduct of centuries of tensions in the Balkans, and an attempt in the wake of World War I to redraw the political boundaries of Europe and the Middle East. That included forming the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, initially known as the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, a particularly fragile enterprise, and there was almost constant tension between the majority Serbs and the other Yugoslav nationalities, especially the Croats.
Depending on the source, many authors have focused on different catalysts for Yugoslavia’s demise, but Vesna Drapac may have succinctly summed the situation up when he wrote that by the end, the state “lacked a reason to exist.” There is certainly something in this sentiment, but the disintegration came at an enormous cost.
Given what happened in Yugoslavia, it should be little surprise that Bosnia did not have its fully-established borders until the 19th century, and even in modern times, in many respects the people distinguished and defined Bosnia as a polity more than its shifting borders, and regardless of whether Bosnia operated as an independent state or kingdom. It was during the Middle Ages that Bosnia’s culture and ethnic makeup truly began to coalesce, despite the politically rocky nature of the era in the Balkans.
