Summary

Bologna, 1944. World-weary Comandante De Luca is tasked with investigating three brutal murders, with the lives of ten Italian hostages on the line. The pitch-black prequel to the Inspector De Luca quartet, by the master of Italian Noir.
`A brutal evocation of a dystopian past, a stunning winter portrait of the debris and human detritus of wartime Bologna, and a gripping and complex trio of murders´ Peter May
`Imbued with the cruel compromises of a city on the brink of collapse, immersive, evocative and as opaque as the soot-stained snow, this is historical crime fiction at its finest´ Tom Benjamin
`A truly insightful, penetrating and raw portrait of a man and a city ravaged by bloody conflict and the terror of fascism and war´ Paul Burke, European Literature Network
_____
In November 1944, in the worst winter ever known in Bologna, in the depths of the war, the bomb-scarred streets are home to starving refugees who have fled the advancing Allies. The Fascist Black Brigades, the officers of the S.S. and the partisans of the Italian Resistance compete for control of the city streets in bloody skirmishes.
Comandante De Luca, who has proved himself "the most brilliant investigator" in Bologna, but who is now unwillingly working for the Political Police in a building that doubles as a torture facility, finds himself in trouble when three murders land on his desk: a professor shot through the eye, an engineer beaten to death, and a German corporal left to be gnawed on by rats in a flooded cellar.
De Luca must rapidly unravel all three cases with ten lives on the line: ten Italian hostages who will face a Nazi firing squad if the corporal's killing is not solved to the German command's satisfaction.
As he navigates a web of personal and political motivations – his life increasingly at risk – De Luca will not stop until he has uncovered the dangerous secrets concealed in the frozen heart of his city.
_____
`One of Italy's most acclaimed crime authors´ Barry Forshaw
`The unravelling of the three cases is fraught with hazard and takes the reader on a dark journey into the terrible place that Bologna has become … not just a gripping whodunnit, but also a glimpse into the grim winter where this murder mystery is set´ Historical Novel Society
`Tasked with an impossible job in a world in turmoil for which the "noir" adjective seems almost inadequate, De Luca must survive on his wits and beyond in a tense race against time in a world of torn loyalties, both political and personal. The return of a much-tortured but believable character´ Maxim Jakubowski, CrimeTime
`A stripped-down historical thriller loaded with tension´ La Repubblica
`The Darkest Winter paints the portrait of a city devastated by war, scarred by bombs and with its poorest inhabitants living in desperation. The result is a living fresco, a snapshot of an era. The quality of Lucarelli's research, in-depth analysis and narrative style put him in a league of his own´ Corriere della Serra
`Lucarelli has proven yet again that he is an extraordinary writer, navigating with ease the murky waters between crime fiction, historical novel and social commentary´ La Nuova

At twenty-six, Princeton grad Michael Wang is trapped. Stifled under the bamboo ceiling at General Motors, he's working quietly on a breakthrough in self-driving car technology that he hopes will catapult him out of obscurity. Disaffected and largely friendless in San Francisco, he's dogged by resentment towards the Ivy Leaguers who never accepted him and his colleagues who see him as passive and faceless.

But all that changes when one night, on a freelance coding platform, he meets the beautiful and enigmatic Vivian. She's been admiring Michael's work from afar and represents a rival Beijing tech company that's eager to poach him, liberate his ideas from the stagnant confines of GM, and help him find success. For Michael, it's no choice at all. But as soon as Michael arrives in Beijing, Vivian vanishes. When the true nature of his new position is made clear, Michael finds himself enmeshed in a dangerous web of industrial espionage and counterintelligence. Caught between two countries that view him as a pawn, where do his loyalties lie?

Piercingly intelligent and ruthlessly contemporary, The Expat is a spy novel and a thrilling exploration of the myth of meritocracy, high-tech immigration, U.S.-China conflicts, identity, and disaffection that asks: in the pursuit of self-actualization, who will we betray and how far will we go?

This is an audio enhanced version - with music and sound effects - of a book long hailed as one of the great science fiction classics, H.G. Wells' The Island of Doctor Moreau. It tells the story of Edward Prendick, a shipwreck survivor who is brought to an uncharted island where he encounters Doctor Moreau, a mad scientist bent on experimenting with human/animal hybrids. Described by Wells himself as "an exercise in youthful blasphemy," this story is a disturbing and fascinating look into the moral responsibility of scientific experimentation, the ethics of meddling with the natural world and, ultimately, what it means to be human.

“Another evocative and boldly executed historical whodunit irresistibly steeped in Civil War atmosphere and arcana” from the author of Honor’s Kingdom (Booklist).   A Union general’s senseless murder is swiftly cloaked in lies and the evidence points to Irish laborers struggling to find a place in their new homeland. But the turmoil of war hides layers of dangerous secrets, and a Welsh immigrant nursing wounds old and new must overcome ancient hatreds to honor justice.   In this gripping novel that travels from brutal coal mines to the grim battlefield of Fredericksburg, Washington intrigue and industrial corruption collide with hints of rural witchcraft and the sorrows of political exile. A wandering beauty who may be mad, a priest with an unbearable secret, revolutionary assassins, and a brilliant Irish war hero are but a few of the vivid characters who rise full-blooded from theses pages. At once swift of pace and poetic, ablaze with suspense, and rich with insights into the human heart, Bold Sons of Erin continues Owen Parry’s tradition of bringing America’s past to life with unrivaled storytelling ability, extraordinary historical accuracy, and a disarming sense of our common humanity.  “Fifth in the hauntingly rich Abel Jones Civil War series, following Honor’s Kingdom . . . explores a lost area of the Civil War, the effect of immigrant Germans, Welsh, and sons of Erin on the war’s outcome.” —Kirkus Reviews   “Grave robbing and witches provide the atmospheric overture as Maj. Abel Jones, agent for Abraham Lincoln, investigates the murder of a Northern general in his fifth suspenseful adventure.” —Publishers Weekly
