Sinossi

"Meaning of Names" delves into the fascinating world of onomastics, exploring the hidden depths and surprising histories behind common names. This comprehensive guide examines the etymology of popular names, the cultural significance of naming practices, and the psychological impact of names on individuals and society. The book argues that names are powerful symbols carrying deep cultural, historical, and personal significance, offering readers valuable insights into their own identities and broader social forces.
The book progresses from introducing the basics of name etymology to exploring the origins and meanings of names from various cultures. It then examines naming trends and their relationship to social movements, concluding with an analysis of the psychological effects of names. Drawing on linguistic research, historical records, and sociological studies, the author presents a holistic view of naming practices and their far-reaching implications.
The interdisciplinary approach connects onomastics to fields such as sociology, psychology, and cultural anthropology, challenging common assumptions about the power of names in shaping our world. Written in an accessible yet authoritative tone, "Meaning of Names" balances scholarly rigor with engaging storytelling, making it relevant to readers from diverse backgrounds.
While primarily aimed at those interested in language, culture, and personal identity, it also serves as a valuable resource for parents-to-be, genealogy enthusiasts, and writers. The Holy Grail, the head of Christ, the elixir of life, vast treasure and powerful political conspiracies. All of these and more are part of the tale of that enigmatic warrior brotherhood we know as the Knights Templar. It is said they discovered a great secret buried deep beneath the Temple of Solomon and gathered together in-order to protect it from generation to generation. Over time they were feared by all their enemies, not least of which was eventually the Catholic Church itself. A powerful and mighty brotherhood with real hidden secrets that spanned across the known world and even beyond into the new world of the Americas. And all of this from the humble origins of a handful of supposedly poor warrior monks.

The truth is that the Templars had found great treasure. It gave them immense wealth, property and power. Their strength was so great that monarchs of Europe feared them and some plotted their demise.

But their treasure was more than material wealth; it was also philosophically, mystically and spiritually profound. So profound that it was in fact the ultimate secret that has been hidden and protected by secret societies ever since. Prepare to discover the truth.

Idi Amin Dada Oumee (c. 1925 – 16 August 2003) was an Ugandan military officer and politician who served as the third president of Uganda from 1971 to 1979. He ruled as a military dictator and is considered one of the most brutal despots in modern world history. Amin's rule was characterized by rampant human rights abuses, including political repression, ethnic persecution, extrajudicial killings, as well as nepotism, corruption, and gross economic mismanagement. International observers and human rights groups estimate that between 100,000 and 500,000 people were killed under his regime.

In Invisible Intelligence, educationalist, filmmaker and best-selling author Welby Ings considers how schools measure intelligence and shows how narrow definitions of literacy and numeracy can lead to bright students being described as ‘behind’ and positioned as problems, when they are not. Ings mixes poignant, humorous and insightful storytelling with current research to explore the ways that some children’s intelligent approaches to problem-solving are dismissed or ignored, with devastating consequences for individuals and society. Yet Invisible Intelligence offers hope. Written with wisdom, experience and compassion, it is the kind of book that ‘puts an arm around the shoulders’ of those who love and work with kids whose intelligence is not recognised because they don’t learn the same way as other children. Pragmatic, wise and helpful, Invisible Intelligence shows what we can do better in education, and why it’s so important that we do.

    Against Decolonization - Taking...

Decolonization has lost its way. Originally a struggle to escape the West's direct political and economic control, it has become a catch-all idea, often for performing "morality" or "authenticity;" it suffocates African thought and denies African agency.

Olúfemi Táíwò fiercely rejects the indiscriminate application of 'decolonization' to everything from literature, language and philosophy to sociology, psychology and medicine. He argues that the decolonization industry, obsessed with cataloguing wrongs, is seriously harming scholarship on and in Africa. He finds 'decolonization' of culture intellectually unsound and wholly unrealistic, conflating modernity with coloniality, and groundlessly advocating an open-ended undoing of global society's foundations. Worst of all, today's movement attacks its own cause: "decolorizers" themselves are disregarding, infantilizing and imposing values on contemporary African thinkers.

This powerful, much-needed intervention questions whether today's 'decolonization' truly serves African empowerment. Táíwò's is a bold challenge to respect African intellectuals as innovative adaptors, appropriators and synthesizers of ideas they have always seen as universally relevant.
