  Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a therapeutic approach that has garnered widespread recognition for its effectiveness in treating trauma, particularly post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Developed by Francine Shapiro in the late 1980s, EMDR is founded on the concept that distressing memories can become “stuck” in the brain, leading to emotional and psychological difficulties. By using bilateral stimulation—usually in the form of guided eye movements—EMDR aims to facilitate the processing of these memories, enabling individuals to integrate them in a way that reduces emotional distress. 
  At its core, EMDR is grounded in the understanding that trauma can impair the brain's natural processing abilities. When a traumatic event occurs, the brain’s memory systems may not fully encode the memory, leaving the experience fragmented and unresolved. As a result, individuals may experience intrusive thoughts, flashbacks, and heightened emotional responses associated with the unresolved trauma. EMDR aims to "unstick" these memories and allow the brain to reprocess them, turning them from vivid, emotionally charged experiences into less distressing memories that can be stored in a more adaptive manner. 
  The key to EMDR's effectiveness lies in its use of bilateral stimulation. During the therapy session, the client follows the therapist’s fingers or another form of rhythmic bilateral stimulation (e.g., auditory tones or tactile taps) while focusing on distressing memories. This process is thought to mimic the natural mechanisms the brain uses during REM sleep, a stage associated with memory consolidation and emotional processing. By engaging both hemispheres of the brain in this way, EMDR helps clients process traumatic memories, alleviating their emotional charge and reducing their impact on daily life.

  Perhaps you have heard of the horrible stories of the Spanish, Portuguese, or French inquisition, the Catholic body of persecutors who would arrest the supposed “heathens” and accuse them of witchcraft, heresies, blasphemy, adultery, and a whole list of other sins or crimes. Torture, interrogations, executions, burnings, and other inhumane methods were used to then force, coerce, or kill the victims of this Catholic organization within the church at the time. 
  We are talking mostly about medieval times, when the power of the Catholic church extended throughout Europe. The Inquisition, typically called the "Holy Inquisition" in middle ages clerical terms, was a series of organizations within the Catholic Church whose objective was to fight heresy. Research studies of the archives have exposed that the large bulk of sentences were penances, but that cases of repeat unrepentant apostates were given nonreligious courts, where they were normally executed or sentenced to life. The Inquisition was established in 12th-century France to fight spiritual variance (such as apostasy or heresy), particularly amongst the Cathars and Waldensians. The Middle ages Inquisition describes the inquisitorial courts that existed from this time till the mid-15th century.

Scholars and the public alike have traditionally regarded the New Right and the Christian Right as separate movements. Insofar as both are conservative efforts, most people view them as reactionary and driven by a culture-war backlash against liberal changes to society. 
   
   
   
  Chelsea Ebin's The Radical Mind aims to overturn this consensus. Through a close analysis of New Right architects Connaught Marshner and Paul Weyrich (who is often seen as secular but was a committed Catholic), this book explores the way conservative Catholics and Protestants overcame their long-standing antipathy to form a political coalition—what Ebin calls the New Christian Right. Drawing on extensive archival research, Ebin shows how the movement’s key architects infused right-wing activism with religion. 
   
   
   
  The radical aims of the New Christian Right have been obscured by the way they cultivated a shared identity of victimhood and manipulated the discourse about backlash to create a nostalgic idea of the past that they then leveraged to justify their right-wing policy goals. The Catholic-Protestant alliance constructed an imagined past that they projected into the future as their ideal vision of society. Ebin calls this strategy "prefigurative traditionalism"—a paradoxical prefiguring of a manufactured past. Using this tactic, the New Christian Right coalition disguised the radicality of its politics by framing their aims as reactionary and defensive rather than proactive and offensive.

  Why did southern white evangelical Christians resist the civil rights movement in the 1950s and 1960s? Simply put, they believed the Bible told them so. These white Christians entered the battle certain that God was on their side. Ultimately, the civil rights movement triumphed in the 1960s and fundamentally transformed American society. But this victory did little to change southern white evangelicals' theological commitment to segregation. Rather than abandoning their segregationist theology, white evangelicals turned their focus on institutions they still controlled and fought on. 
   
   
   
  Focusing on the case of South Carolina, The Bible Told Them So shows how, despite suffering defeat in the public sphere, white evangelicals continued to battle for their own institutions, preaching and practicing a segregationist Christianity they continued to believe reflected God's will. Increasingly caught in the tension between their sincere belief that God desired segregation and their reluctance to give voice to such ideas for fear of being perceived as bigoted or intolerant, by the late 1960s southern white evangelicals embraced the rhetoric of colorblindness and protection of the family as measures to maintain both segregation and respectable social standing. This strategy set southern white evangelicals on an alternative path for race relations in the decades ahead.
