  Batman's first appearance was in Detective Comics #27 in 1939, but the character was initially a ruthless vigilante who would kill or maim criminals. Over time, he evolved into a hero with a strict moral code against killing. 
    
  Although Bob Kane is often credited as the sole creator of Batman, Bill Finger significantly contributed to the character's design and backstory, including the cowl, cape, and a darker costume, but was not officially credited until 2015. Finger also helped develop the character from a generic superhero to a bat-like persona.
