The story of surfing in Scotland is defined by people who dared to dream in spite of the cold, from Neva MacDonald-Haig and the coffin-lid surfers of Machrihanish, who first took to the waves off the west coast in the 1930s with a little help from a local undertaker, to Andy Bennetts and the pioneers of the 1960s, who discovered many of the nation's best breaks, to contemporary big wave surfer Ben Larg, a native of the tiny island of Tiree who now travels the world riding skyscraper-sized walls of water for a living.
Scotland is also home to a rich and distinctive surfing culture, with its own surfboard shapers, surf instructors, surf filmmakers, surf photographers and surf fashion brands, not to mention surf-inspired artists and musicians. Professional contests held at some of Scotland's best waves have drawn visits from surfing world champions including Tom Curren, Sunny Garcia and John John Florence, and in recent years Scotland's own surfers have begun to make their presence felt on the competitive stage, with the Scottish surf team featuring at the World Surfing Games and at Eurosurf after finally gaining official recognition in 2014.
The View From the Shoulder draws together 20 years of surf journalism from the pages of The Scotsman newspaper, together with fresh context, to create a portrait of a wave-riding community like no other.

How did Mussolini manage to use the 1934 World Cup to benefit his fascist regime? How did North Korea, with its surprising team, reveal itself to the world in 1966? Why did the match between Kuwait and France in 1982 lead to the first diplomatic arbitration? What was behind the scenes of the 1998 'peace match' between the US and Iran? How and why did Qatar win the 2022 World Cup?
In this second volume, Kévin Veyssière tells 22 new stories in which football, in the particular context of World Cups, has found itself at the heart of international political issues, from the beginnings in 1900 to the Qatari edition of 2022. The author explains how, for one hundred and twenty years, the greatest sporting competition has always been a tool for influence and power games.

Could you survive alone, for 2 months at sea in a dugout canoe?
In 1846, James Morrill survived a shipwreck on Australia’s north coast. Though the young sailor was then embraced by the local Indigenous community, in Modern-Day Castaway, Michael Atkinson asks, ‘Could James have built a vessel and made the perilous journey to a historic rescue haven in the Torres Strait?’
With the cyclone season fast approaching, Alone Australia contestant and solo adventurer, Mike Atkinson, sets sail on an extraordinary 1500-kilometre journey to the northern tip of Australia. His aim: to live entirely off the land and sea.
As malnourishment drains his body, Mike navigates his failing dugout canoe through the treacherous waters of the Great Barrier Reef, and along the wild and unforgiving coastline of Cape York. From crocodile defence tactics, to calamitous canoe failure, to fishing with adapted Indigenous tools, Modern-Day Castaway journals Mike’s epic struggle for survival.
This is a truly unique book. A cross between Tom Hanks Castaway (although this story is real, not fiction!), a genuine shipwrecked sailor’s tale and Mike’s awe-inspiring journey of discovery.
