Summary

False Arrest Claims examines the legal avenues available to individuals who believe they have been wrongfully detained, focusing on the Fourth Amendment and its protection against unreasonable seizures. The book clarifies the responsibilities of law enforcement and the rights of individuals, promoting accountability within the legal system.

Did you know that qualified immunity often presents a significant hurdle in false arrest cases, requiring a deep understanding of how courts apply this doctrine? The text argues that a firm grasp of legal thresholds for lawful arrest, combined with judicial oversight, is essential for protecting individual liberties while ensuring public safety.

The book progresses logically, beginning with foundational legal principles like probable cause and reasonable suspicion. It then analyzes legal avenues for those falsely arrested, such as Section 1983 claims, and culminates in best practices for law enforcement to minimize false arrest risks through training and policy development.

By synthesizing legal theory with practical considerations, the book offers unique guidance for legal professionals and law enforcement personnel alike, bridging the gap between academic rigor and real-world relevance in civil rights litigation and criminal justice.

"Highly recommended for fans of Tolkien and Lewis, for those who love literature and ecology, and really for all of us whose capacity for wonder will be expanded by this delightful little book." – Jonathan A. Moo, professor of New Testament and environmental studies at Whitworth University
When an author of fiction employs the imagination and sets characters in a new location, they are in a sense creating a world. Might such fictional worlds give us a deeper appreciation for our own?
Many readers have found themselves, like the Pevensie children, transported by C. S. Lewis into Narnia, and they have traveled from Lantern Waste to Cair Paravel and the edge of the sea. Thanks to J. R. R. Tolkien, readers have also journeyed with Bilbo, Frodo, and their companions across Middle-earth from the Shire to the Lonely Mountain, the forest of Mirkwood, the mines of Moria, and the very fires of Mount Doom. But as often as we enter these fictional worlds as readers, we eventually return to our world refreshed with sharpened insight.
In The Wonders of Creation, biologist Kristen Page explores the beloved fictional landscapes of Narnia and Middle-earth in order to discover what we might learn about real-life landscapes and how to become better stewards of God's good creation.
Based on the annual lecture series hosted at Wheaton College's Marion E. Wade Center, volumes in the Hansen Series reflect on the imaginative work and lasting influence of seven British authors: Owen Barfield, G. K. Chesterton, C. S. Lewis, George MacDonald, Dorothy L. Sayers, J. R. R. Tolkien, and Charles Williams.

Where did the first colonizers of North America from Europe, North Africa and the British Isles first land?
The greatest mixed cluster is in New England and spreading out from it. And how did these ancient travellers journey across the face of North America? Generally in the same way that they got there. In watercraft! To the ancients the seas, lakes and rivers were the superhighways as crossing land until the later Romans developed road systems was in many cases near impossible if not exceptionally difficult. This is how all great exploration has always been done until recently. You sail across a sea and then up the first river you find to see where it will go and this scenario never changes. You only go overland when there are no rivers or lakes as it is much harder to consign goods or travel over unexplored territory than by water.
Another great superhighway to trade was from the Gulf of Mexico and up its tributaries and in some cases via now long lost rivers to the Great Lakes themselves. In fact you did not even need long lost rivers. Present day ones would do just as well. The Des Moines River which connects up with the Mississippi River runs within five miles west of Lake Michigan within the present city limits of Chicago. Not too far to move a boat across land from the Great Lakes to the Des Moines River. Even less distance in the thousand year pluvial periods when water levels were higher and there was more rain. There were wider rivers and more lakes to travel across.

“This culinary cosmic outing is as creative as it is informative.” — STARRED review, Publishers Weekly

From Impossible Burgers to lab-made sushi, two witty, plugged-in food scientists explore leading-edge AgTech for the answer to feeding a settlement on Mars — and nine billion Earthlings too

Feeding a Martian is one of the greatest challenges in the history of agriculture. Will a Red Planet menu involve cheese and ice cream made from vats of fermented yeast? Will medicine cabinets overflow with pharmaceuticals created from engineered barley grown using geothermal energy? Will the protein of choice feature a chicken breast grown in a lab? Weird, wonderful, and sometimes disgusting, figuring out “what’s for dinner on Mars” is far from trivial. If we can figure out how to sustain ourselves on Mars, we will know how to do it on Earth too. In Dinner on Mars, authors Fraser and Newman show how setting the table off-planet will supercharge efforts to produce food sustainably here at home.

For futurists, sci-fi geeks, tech nuts, business leaders, and anyone interested in the future of food, Dinner on Mars puts sustainability and adaptability on the menu in the face of our climate crisis.
