Summary

"Double Jeopardy Clause" explores the intricacies of the Fifth Amendment's protection against being tried twice for the same crime, a cornerstone of Constitutional Law and Criminal Justice. This book examines the historical roots and modern legal interpretations of this clause, especially concerning retrials and appeals. One intriguing aspect is how the definition of "same offense" has evolved through Supreme Court Cases, impacting the balance between individual rights and governmental power. Another is the "dual sovereignty" doctrine, allowing separate prosecutions by state and federal entities for the same actions, a point of ongoing debate. The book uniquely emphasizes the practical application of the Double Jeopardy Clause, moving beyond abstract theory to examine its impact on plea bargaining, sentencing, and post-conviction relief. It begins by laying out the core principles, then progresses through nuanced analyses of retrials following prosecutorial misconduct or judicial errors, and further dissects the appellate process. By connecting double jeopardy to related fields like criminal procedure and legal history, the book provides a comprehensive and accessible understanding, making it valuable for legal scholars, attorneys, and anyone interested in the intersection of politics and academia.

This book offers an in-depth exploration of three of the most influential dynasties in Chinese history: the Han, Qin, and Tang Dynasties. This book delves into the powerful legacies of these dynasties, each of which shaped China’s cultural, political, and social development in profound ways. The Qin Dynasty, under the leadership of Emperor Qin Shi Huang, is known for unifying China and initiating monumental infrastructure projects such as the Great Wall and the Terracotta Army. The Han Dynasty, a golden age in Chinese history, expanded China’s borders, solidified Confucian ideals, and fostered the flourishing of trade along the Silk Road. Finally, the Tang Dynasty, often regarded as the most prosperous period in China’s imperial history, saw significant advancements in arts, culture, and governance.
In the Qin Dynasty, China was unified for the first time under a single ruler, marking the beginning of imperial rule. Emperor Qin’s centralization of power, creation of a standardized legal system, and the construction of defensive walls set the stage for the future of Chinese civilization. Although short-lived, the Qin Dynasty’s impact on Chinese governance and infrastructure would echo through the centuries.
Meanwhile, the Han Dynasty succeeded the Qin, ushering in an era of stability, economic prosperity, and cultural development. The Han established a strong bureaucracy and military, advanced in science and technology, and integrated Confucianism as the official philosophy, influencing Chinese society for over two millennia.
The Tang Dynasty, which followed the collapse of the Sui Dynasty, is celebrated for its cultural achievements, including the flourishing of poetry, painting, and literature. The Tang Empire expanded China's territory to its greatest extent, and its cosmopolitan capital, Chang'an, became a vibrant hub for international trade and cultural exchange.

Darwin longgrassers have been living large since the beginning. They come from all over the Territory to camp in the public spaces around town, to catch up with family and friends, attend health and legal matters, holiday and shop, and drink. Especially drink. And the whitefellas don’t like it. They think they’re noisy and dirty and rude. So, they try to move them on.
For 150 years they’ve been trying to move them on. But the longgrassers won’t go. Yet beneath this running battle between the settled and the free lurks an undeniable truth about colonisation that is almost Newtonian in style. This is a story of resilience and denial against outrageous odds, an underdog’s triumph of survival in the modern world, for a people who just refuse to give in

Despite their own cultural differences, the nations that comprised the Iroquois Confederacy established their political dominance across much of America’s East Coast and Midwest through conquest, and it is that aspect which has perhaps best endured among Americans in terms of the Iroquois’ legacy. European settlers who came into contact with the Mohawks in the Northeast certainly learned to respect their combat skills, to the point that there were literally bounties on the Mohawks’ heads, with scalps fetching money for colonists who succeeded in slaying them and carrying away the “battle prize”.
One of the best known of the six nations is the Seneca, and arguably the most famous Seneca chief was Ely Samuel Parker. Over the course of his life, he was a Seneca chief, a civil engineer, a close friend and adjutant to General Ulysses S. Grant, an advocate for the Indian peoples, and the first Native American Commissioner of the Department of Indian Affairs. His marriage to a much younger socialite scandalized Washington, and he made a fortune on Wall Street and lost it all. He ended his life in genteel poverty, working for nearly 20 years in an obscure position for the New York City Police Department.
Parker was a largely self-taught engineer, who worked on various canal projects, and was hired by the Department of the Treasury to supervise the construction of several buildings in Galena, Illinois, where he met a shy salesclerk named Ulysses S. Grant. At the age of 18, he dined with President Polk, later talked with President Lincoln, and had the commanding general of the U.S. Army as the best man at his wedding. He was the principal source for the first serious ethnological work by one of the first American ethnologists, who dedicated the book to Parker. He was a plaintiff before the U.S. Supreme Court when he was in his teens and was so important in the Seneca’s struggle to retain their Tonawanda reservation that he was made grand sachem.
