Summary

One shocking revelation after another strikes our porcine hero, peeling back the seemingly innocuous layers of the world of Mesteria to reveal its hidden cruelty. The Yethma status has more to it than meets the eye, as Mister Pig learns the hard way when Jess is put in grave danger.

Luckily, they get a chance for some rest and relaxation during their journey to the capital. At a village, the duo encounters another Yethma girl, Ceres, who possesses gorgeous legs that Mister Pig can’t stop admiring, as well as the handsome huntsman Naut, who makes Mister Pig bristle with catlike wariness. A simple stay in the village turns out to be more trouble than expected, and our hog hero must decide how far he’ll go to protect Jess.

“Sense and Super Abilities” is a pastiche of the settings, style, and sort of characters usually associated with Jane Austen and Superlatives, superhuman characters similar to modern comic book heroes. Though it combines two previously existing elements, it is an original story and not a mash-up. Told as a first-person narrative by its main character, Catherine Eldenbrook, “Sense and Super-Abilities” details:
    • Catherine’s humble beginnings as a reclusive scientist’s daughter.
    • Her personal history, the death of her mother, and her long and loving relationship with Fanny, her robotic nursemaid and governess
    • Her transformation into an augmented being, and learning that it is her destiny to become a Superlative.
    • Her training under the other Superlatives, and her ultimate test coming from somewhere frighteningly close to home
Readers hear Catherine’s story from Catherine herself. While she may begin as a simple country girl with no idea of going to London to train in the ways of combating ultimate evil, it is a fate that she learns is inescapable. She also learns that power, attaining it as well as using it wisely, can have dire and unexpected consequences. “Sense and Super-Abilities” is the tale of one girl’s coming of age, and how she learns to do what is right, even if it is not what comes easily.

What connects Marliyn Monroe, Disneyworld, "The Satanic Verses" and cyber space? Answer: Postmodernism. But what exactly is postmodernism?

This Graphic Guide explains clearly the maddeningly enigmatic concept that has been used to define the world's cultural condition over the last three decades.
Introducing Postmodernism tracks the idea back to its roots by taking a tour of some of the most extreme and exhilarating events, people and thought of the last 100 years: in art - constructivism, conceptual art, Marcel Duchamp, Jackson Pollock and Andy Warhol; in politics and history - McCarthy's witch-hunts, feminism, Francis Fukuyama and the Holocaust; in philosophy - the work of Derrida, Baudrillard, Foucault and Heidegger. The book also explores postmodernism's take on today, and the anxious grip of globalisation, unpredictable terrorism and unforeseen war that greeted the dawn of the 21st century.

Regularly controversial, rarely straightforward and seldom easy, postmodernism is nonetheless a thrilling intellectual adventure. Introducing Postmodernism is the ideal guide.

Possessing no supernatural powers, Batman is the most realistic of all the superheroes. His feats are achieved through rigorous training and mental discipline, and with the aid of fantastic gadgets. Drawing on his training as a neuroscientist, kinesiologist, and martial artist, E. Paul Zehr explores the question: Could a mortal ever become Batman?Zehr discusses the physical training necessary to maintain bad-guy-fighting readiness while relating the science underlying this process, from strength conditioning to the cognitive changes a person would endure in undertaking such a regimen. In probing what a real-life Batman could achieve, Zehr considers the level of punishment a consummately fit and trained person could handle, how hard and fast such a person could punch and kick, and the number of adversaries that individual could dispatch. He also tells us what it would be like to fight while wearing a batsuit and the amount of food we'd need to consume each day to maintain vigilance as Gotham City's guardian.A fun foray of escapism grounded in sound science, Becoming Batman provides the background for attaining the realizable—though extreme—level of human performance that would allow you to be a superhero.
