Summary

1975 was shaping up to be Joe Holland's year. Everything was clicking into place. In the first few months he'd passed his driving test, completed his electrical apprenticeship and was approaching his twenty first birthday, when he'd gain access to his deceased grandfather's inheritance money. Apart from his toxic relationship with his stepfather, life was good. But in May, a family skeleton came rattling out of the cupboard where it had been hidden for decades. Joe was to learn that every tree, including a family tree, was only as strong (or weak) as it's roots. And his was about to come toppling down. Once over the initial shock, his search for answers, and resolution, would take him from the leafy suburbs of Hertfordshire to the mean streets of New York City, and a date with destiny.

Can Jakob and his friends survive the horrors sent against them?
In their relentless struggle for freedom, the Highlanders cling to a fragile advantage. But their defiance draws the wrath of the Governors, who wield bloodshed and terror to quash the rebellion.
Jakob and Talia find themselves thrust into the heart of the conflict, pursued by Stalkers intent on extinguishing their resistance. Each attack reinforces their belief that defeating the malevolent forces plaguing them demands nothing less than the permanent removal of the Governors.
Talia's quest for justice leads her down a perilous path. She discovers that the cost may be unbearable, risking everything she holds dear for vengeance, including her love for Davin.
Meanwhile, Jakob confronts an even darker peril far more menacing than the Stalkers and Wraiths. Has he unwittingly unleashed an ancient evil that will consume New Caledonia?
Elsewhere, Bryen and Aislinn confront Kendric Winborne and his wife, only to find themselves ensnared in a perilous trap.

An entrancing and prismatic debut novel by Christine Lai, set in a near future fraught with ecological collapse, Landscapes brilliantly explores memory, empathy, preservation, and art as an instrument for recollection and renewal.

In the English countryside—decimated by heat and drought—Penelope archives what remains of an estate's once notable collection. As she catalogues the library's contents, she keeps a diary of her final months in the dilapidated country house that has been her home for two decades and a refuge for those who have been displaced by disasters. Out of necessity, Penelope and her partner, Aidan, have sold the house and its scheduled demolition marks the pressing deadline for completing the archive. But with it also comes the impending return of Aidan's brother, Julian, at whose hands Penelope suffered during a brief but violent relationship twenty-two years before. As Julian's visit looms, Penelope finds herself unable to suppress the past, and she clings to art as a means of understanding, of survival, and of reckoning.

Recalling the works of Rachel Cusk and Kazuo Ishiguro, Landscapes is an elegiac and spellbinding blend of narrative, essay, and diary that reinvents the pastoral and the country house novel for our age of catastrophe, and announces the arrival of an extraordinarily gifted new writer.

While besieging an enemy castle, Laird Douglas Hay comes across the half-frozen body of a lass. She's obviously one of the enemy, but he cannot allow her to die. Besides, as his captive, she could bring a hefty ransom. He revives her, a task easier managed than her fiery temper and the intense desire heating his veins.

Taken as a prisoner by the brutish warrior, Lady Annora Comyn is determined to make her escape. Secretly, she believes the war between the Comyns and the Bruce is ridiculous, that the vying for the crown should have died the day her royal brother was murdered. Annora struggles internally with the notion of letting men fight their battles or putting herself forward as collateral in a treaty to unite the warring Scots. After all, there are far worse things than having to kiss Laird Hay every day for the rest of her life . . .

    Contains mature themes.
