Summary

In "The History of Muslims in Spain," Stanley Lane-Poole meticulously chronicles the significant yet often overlooked impact of Muslim civilization on the Iberian Peninsula. Drawing on a rich tapestry of historical narratives, Lane-Poole employs a narrative style that marries scholarly rigor with vivid descriptions, bringing to life the vibrant culture, remarkable architecture, and intellectual advancements of Muslim Spain. Set against the backdrop of the Reconquista, the book delves into the complexities of religious coexistence and the socio-political dynamics of the time, providing invaluable insights into a pivotal era that shaped modern Europe. Stanley Lane-Poole, a distinguished historian and Arabist, was profoundly influenced by the socio-political intricacies he observed in the Middle East and North Africa during the late 19th century. His extensive travels and academic pursuits in Islamic studies fostered a deep admiration for the contributions of Muslim cultures to Western civilization. Lane-Poole's dedication to unveiling historical truths makes this work an essential exploration of the Muslim influence that thrived in Spain for nearly eight centuries. This book is highly recommended for anyone interested in the historical interplay between Islam and Europe, as well as those seeking a deeper understanding of the cultural and intellectual legacy of the Islamic world. Our government is in crisis, mired in bureaucracy and often unable to fix tough problems. This book provides an essential new model for transforming the system and getting things done.

COVID. Climate change. Refugee resettlement. Global supply chains. We're facing a new generation of complex problems, stretching across the public and private sectors. Historically we've looked to government for big solutions, but the reality is, the government we have now is a poor match for the problems we face.

We need a fresh, new approach. As William D. Eggers and Donald F. Kettl show in this indispensable book, we need a government of bridgebuilders—public managers and leaders who collaborate with partners, both inside and outside government, to get the job done. They manage horizontally instead of vertically, they see their role as connectors, and they identify which players have the assets needed to solve the problems at hand.

Each chapter examines one of the ten core principles of bridgebuilding and features practical tips and dynamic cases of how effective leaders have put each principle to work. Also included is a special section on creating a hundred-day bridgebuilding plan.

As the Western Roman Empire collapsed in the late 5th century, Hadrian’s Wall was abandoned and Roman control of the area broke down. Little is known of this period of British history, but soon the Anglo-Saxons – who had been harassing the Saxon Shore as pirates – showed up and began to settle the land, creating a patchwork of little kingdoms and starting a new era of British history. Several early medieval historians, writing well after the events, said the Anglo-Saxons were invited to Britain to defend the region from the northern tribes and ended up taking over. The Venerable Bede (672 or 673-735) said in his Historia ecclesiastica gentis Anglorum (“Ecclesiastical History of the English People”) that in the year 449, “The British consulted what was to be done and where they should seek assistance to prevent or repel the cruel and frequent incursions of the northern nations. They all agreed with their king Vortigern to call over to their aid, from the parts beyond the sea, the Saxon nation. … The two first commanders are said to have been Hengist and Horsa.”
However they came to control most of England, the Anglo-Saxons became the dominant power in the region for nearly 500 years, and the strength of their cultural influence could be felt even after William the Conqueror won the Battle of Hastings and became the first Norman ruler on the island. The efforts to consolidate his rule in England were complicated from the start, both due to external enemies and those jockeying for his position while he was still alive, but the Normans would manage just barely to cling to power over England, and William remains the last foreign conqueror of the island.
