Summary

Turtle Magnetic Sense explores the remarkable ability of sea turtles to navigate vast distances using Earth's magnetic field, a phenomenon known as magnetoreception. This book dives into the sensory biology behind turtle migration, explaining how these creatures return to the same nesting beaches after years at sea. It reveals that sea turtles possess an innate magnetic map, a set of genetically encoded responses to specific magnetic field intensities, which guides their navigation.

The book starts by introducing the basics of Earth's magnetic field. It then examines the sensory mechanisms involved in magnetoreception, such as the potential roles of magnetite crystals, and explores behavioral experiments demonstrating the turtles' ability to discriminate between different magnetic fields.

The book culminates by discussing the implications of magnetic navigation for conservation, highlighting potential threats from human-induced magnetic field disturbances. This exploration of animal navigation is crucial for understanding sensory physiology and behavior. This unique synthesis of existing research provides an up-to-date account of sea turtle magnetic navigation, making it valuable for students, researchers, and anyone fascinated by natural science and animal behavior.

The book progresses logically, building from basic concepts to complex ecological implications, bridging biology, physics, and environmental science.

‘A delightful odyssey through the history, nostalgia, fascination and British love of cake. Quirky, charming, and fun.’ PRUE LEITH
The British take cakes seriously. We hold strong opinions about how to bake a brownie with the perfect squidge, the correct proportions of icing to sponge, and whether it’s jam or cream first on our scones. Now – thanks to the success of a certain TV baking show – our flirtation with flour, fruit and frosting has become a full-blown love affair.
But how did the humble cake evolve from a simple combination of starch and fat to the show-stopping bakes of today, taking pride of place at every meaningful life celebration? Travelling the country from Dundee to the Isle of Wight, writer Andrew Baker (by name, not occupation) serves up the story of our national obsession with cake, one slice at a time.
On this greediest of quests, Andrew seeks to discover the ‘True Slice’ of each iconic cake. This enviable task sees him eat sponge sandwiched with jam and cream at Queen Victoria’s holiday home Osborne House, discover the illustrious yet scandal-filled history of the Battenberg’s saccharine squares and learn how a caterpillar enrobed in chocolate became a party-starting birthday centerpiece.
From King Alfred’s oatcakes to The River Café’s revered Chocolate Nemesis, this is the crumb-spattered, buttercream-smeared story of the cakes that have claimed a place on British tables – and in our hearts.
Andrew Baker's Cake is a non-fiction exploration of the best regional dishes in Britain. From Scottish oatcakes to Welsh scones, this narrative is a testament to the ethnic diversity and evolution of English cooking.
For fans of Diana Henry (From the Oven to the Table), Toni Tipton-Martin (When Southern Women Cook), Regula Ysewijn (The Official Bridgerton Cookbook), Ann Volkwein (Salt Hank), and Max Miller (Tasting History).

THE ULTIMATE TRIVIA AND CURIOUS FACTS COLLECTION

    CREATED BY TRIVIA HUB

One Piece is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda, serialized since 1997. The story follows Monkey D. Luffy and his Straw Hat Pirates as they explore the Grand Line in search of the "One Piece" treasure. The manga has been adapted into anime series, films, live-action series, and video games. It's the best-selling manga of all time, praised for its storytelling, characters, and humor. One Piece is known for its unique world with diverse races, the World Government, and special powers like Devil Fruits and Haki.

    CURIOUS FACT SAMPLES:

Eiichiro Oda's interest in pirates began in childhood from watching the animated series Vicky the Viking, which inspired him to create a manga series about pirates. Oda was also influenced by pirate biographies and incorporated characteristics of real-life pirates into many One Piece characters

The concept of Devil Fruits, which grant unique powers, was inspired by the manga Doraemon, with their abilities reflecting Oda's personal fantasies and daily life. Oda designs Devil Fruits based on what would fulfill a human desire, making their appearance enticing to eat.

The names of many special attacks in One Piece use a form of punning, where phrases written in kanji are paired with an idiosyncratic reading. Some of Zoro's sword techniques sound like types of food when read aloud, although they look fearsome when read by sight.

Oda is very particular about the translation of his work, with the English version often using one onomatopoeia for multiple used in the Japanese version. For example, different sounds of rain are both translated as "fshhhhhhh".

The environmental crisis will not be solved by battery technology. We are looking for answers in the wrong places.

Life began with the hydrogenation of CO2, and this is the process we must return to in order to heal the planet. Ground-breaking ongoing research into bacterial processes means our knowledge of bacterial processes is ever-expanding, and we can harness this new knowledge to develop a parallel carbon economy using engineered bacteria for fuel, food, and materials. This would enable rewilding on a vast scale, with the small land footprint of bacterial technologies solving the current conflict in land use between farming and fuel and materials production.

In this fascinating and illuminating book, Peter Forbes shines a light on this crucial technology and offers a tantalising glimpse at what is possible. To solve the big problems, sometimes you have to think small.
