Summary

"Sticky Things" explores the fascinating science behind adhesion, uncovering why certain materials are inherently sticky. Delving into the realms of biology and materials science, the book explains the forces that govern stickiness in both natural and synthetic substances. Readers will discover how intermolecular forces and surface energy play crucial roles in determining whether a substance clings to another surface or itself. For example, the unique chemical composition of tree sap, a blend of resins and sugars, contributes to its remarkable adhesive properties. The book examines natural adhesives like honey and biological glues used by marine organisms, providing insights into how nature has optimized adhesive solutions through evolutionary processes. By studying these examples, the book highlights how scientists can draw inspiration from nature for technological innovation, a concept known as biomimicry. Progressing from fundamental principles to specific examples, "Sticky Things" begins with an introduction to surface energy and wetting before exploring case studies of glue, honey, and tree sap. It concludes with a discussion of practical applications, from developing new coatings to creating biomedical materials.

    Studies in Pessimism

    Arthur Schopenhauer

Arthur Schopenhauer, an early 19th century philosopher, made significant contributions to metaphysics, ethics, and aesthetics. His work also informed theories of evolution and psychology, largely through his theory of the will to power – a concept which Nietzsche famously adopted and developed. Despite this, he is today, as he was during his life, overshadowed by his contemporary, Hegel. Schopenhauer's social/psychological views, put forth in this work and in others, are directly derived from his metaphysics, which was strongly influenced by Eastern thought. His pessimism forms an interesting and perhaps questionable contrast with his obvious joy in self-expression, both in the elegance of his prose and in his practice of playing the flute nightly. His brilliance, poetry, and crushing pessimism can be seen immediately in this work, as for example in this claim from the first chapter: "The pleasure in this world, it has been said, outweighs the pain; or, at any rate, there is an even balance between the two. If the reader wishes to see shortly whether this statement is true, let him compare the respective feelings of two animals, one of which is engaged in eating the other." We see also, in this work, his misogyny, as for example in his claim that "as lions are provided with claws and teeth, and elephants and boars with tusks, . . . so Nature has equipped woman, for her defence and protection, with the arts of dissimulation; and all the power which Nature has conferred upon man in the shape of physical strength and reason, has been bestowed upon women in this form." Given his opening comment, the translator, T.B. Saunders, seems to have been at least somewhat sympathetic to this perspective. - Summary by D.E. Wittkower

Systemic - How Racism Is Making...

    Layal Liverpool

Layal Liverpool spent years bouncing from doctor to doctor, each one failing to diagnose her dermatological complaint. Just when she'd grown used to the idea that she had an extremely rare and untreatable skin condition, one dermatologist, after a quick exam, told her that she had a classic (and common) case of eczema and explained that it often appears differently on darker skin. Her experience stuck with her, making her wonder whether other medical conditions might be going undiagnosed in darker-skinned people and whether racism could, in fact, make people sick.

The pandemic taught us that diseases like Covid disproportionately affect people of color. Here, Liverpool goes a step further to show that this disparity exists for all types of illness and that it is caused by racism. In Systemic, she shares her journey to show how racism, woven into our societies, as well as into the structures of medicine and science, is harmful to our health. Refuting the false belief that there are biological differences between races, she goes on to show that racism-related stress and trauma can however, lead to biological changes that make people of color more vulnerable to illness, debunking the myth of illness as the great equalizer. Liverpool reveals the fatal stereotypes that keep people of color undiagnosed, untreated, and unsafe, and tells us what we can do about it.
