Summary

Exoplanet Discoveries explores the fascinating realm of planets beyond our solar system and the ingenious techniques used to find them. The book delves into the transit method, where astronomers detect planets by observing dips in a star's brightness as a planet passes in front, and the radial velocity method, which identifies planets by the wobble they induce in their host star. These methods have revealed that exoplanets are incredibly diverse, ranging from gas giants larger than Jupiter to rocky worlds potentially similar to Earth.

The book progresses logically, starting with historical context and moving through the details of each detection method, including instrumentation and data analysis. It highlights the importance of space missions and telescopes in gathering crucial data, emphasizing how these technologies contribute to our understanding of planetary science and astrobiology.

Readers will gain insights into the challenges of searching for habitable planets and the ongoing quest for biosignatures, all while appreciating the technological advancements driving space exploration.

In this searing, honest memoir, a Black queer emergency-room nurse works the front lines of care during COVID-19.

Britney Daniels is a Black, masculine-presenting, tattooed lesbian from a working-class background. For the last five years, she has been working as an emergency-room nurse. She began Journal of a Black Queer Nurse as a personal diary, a tool to heal from the day-to-day traumas of seeing too much and caring too much.

Hilarious, gut-wrenching, and infuriating by turns, these stories are told from the perspective of a deeply empathetic, no-nonsense young nurse, who highlights the way race, inequality, and a profit-driven healthcare system make the hospital a place where systemic racism is lived.

Whether it is giving one's own clothes to a homeless patient, sticking up for patients of color in the face of indifference from white doctors and nurses, or nursing one's own back pain accrued from transporting too many bodies, Journal of a Black Queer Nurse reveals the ways in which care is much more than treating a physical body and how the commitment to real care—care that involves listening to and understanding patients in a deeper sense—demands nurses, especially nurses of color, must also be warriors.

Read by the author, Tim Smedley. The Times Book of the Year pickA gripping, thought-provoking and ultimately optimistic investigation into the world’s next great climate crisis – the scarcity of water.‘Smart, sobering, and scholarly. ’ – Steve Brusatte, author of The Rise and Fall of DinosaursWater scarcity is the next big climate crisis. Water stress – not just scarcity, but also quality issues caused by pollution – is already driving the first waves of climate refugees. Rivers are drying out before they meet the oceans and ancient lakes are disappearing. It’s increasingly clear that human mismanagement of water is dangerously unsustainable, for both ecological and human survival. And yet in recent years some key countries have been quietly and very successfully addressing water stress. How are Singapore and Israel, for example – both severely water-stressed countries – not in the same predicament as Chennai or California? In The Last Drop, award-winning environmental journalist Tim Smedley meets experts, victims, activists and pioneers to find out how we can mend the water table that our survival depends upon. He offers a fascinating, universally relevant account of the environmental and human factors that have led us to this point, and suggests practical ways to address the crisis, before it’s too late.'You will never see the water you use in the same way again' – Helen Czerski, BBC broadcaster

In "You're Not Doing It Right," Ellen Patnaude bravely opens the door to the haunting reality of Lewy body dementia (LBD) and unravels its profound impact on families. One of the most common types of dementia after Alzheimer's disease, LBD is marked by fluctuations in cognition, hallucinations, and motor symptoms. The journey begins with subtle warnings of small changes in her mother's behavior that worry Patnaude's father, but go unnoticed by the author and her sibling.
Through heartfelt storytelling, Patnaude recounts her challenges in addressing the disturbing shifts in her mother's behavior and managing their long-standing, emotionally charged relationship. The pages unfold with raw honesty, detailing the struggles that ensure when a family is faced with a progressive, life-altering diagnosis. In contrast to the 'long goodbye' of Alzheimer's disease, LBD plunges Patnaude and her family into a roller coaster ride from hell. Every emotion is laid bare, from the initial denial to the desperate attempts to help and connect with a loved one slipping away.
Patnaude offers invaluable insights and lessons learned in the throes of this heartbreaking journey. With unwavering candor, she reflects on what might have made a difference for herself and her family members and shares the resources that may help other struggling families. She acknowledges the commonality of denial and the universal resistance to accepting a devastating diagnosis, especially when glimpses of normalcy persist. The relentless challenges of caring for someone with any type of dementia often lead to heightened stress, exhaustion, and severe emotional strain on caregivers. In this exploration of love, loss, and resilience, Patnaude extends a compassionate hand to those grappling with similar circumstances, offering solace and understanding within the pages of this deeply moving memoir.

    Nature's Echo - Harnessing...

Whether restoring trees, conserving existing ecosystems, rewilding native animals, or changing incentives to elicit better choices, targeted interventions can tap into feedback loops that can improve our planet, our economy, and our lives.
A feedback loop occurs when the outcome of a process restarts that process, creating a cyclical chain of cause and effect. Feedback loops can either maintain the status quo (a negative feedback loop), or they can create a “snowball effect” (a positive feedback loop) where more begets more. These feedback loops have been with us since the beginning of time, and they are implicit in the formation of everything that exists in the universe. Physical feedback loops literally form our physical reality around us, but psychological feedback loops determine how we build our perspective of reality.
In 2019, The Crowther Lab, which Tom Crowther runs at ETH Zurich, a leading Swiss public research university, published a study in the journal Science on the Earth’s carrying capacity for trees. Using satellite imagery, massive datasets compiled from thousands of studies, and computer models, they evaluated where trees could naturally grow on Earth. They estimated that the planet had room for an additional one trillion trees on land not currently in use by humans for farming or settlement – land that was once forest. And the model predicted that those recovering forests would capture one third of all human carbon emissions since the industrial revolution.  Yet, lost in that initial discussion was the inclusion of the importance of biodiversity and care to ensure the reforestation efforts meant building millions of local feedback loops, where local people and nature thrive together. It meant millions of local communities, indigenous populations, farmers, and foresters working with nature to recreate whole, healthy, stable ecosystems as biodiverse as the ones we’ve lost.
In Nature’s Echo, Crowther explains the powerful force of feedback loops in nature and how, at the moment, our planet is experiencing a series of positive feedback loops as we hurtle towards environmental collapse. These feedback loops are too powerful to fight against. However, his research consistently shows that, instead of fighting feedback loops, we can harness their potential to create spectacular, worthwhile change. We can use feedback loops to help the Earth heal itself.
