Sinossi

"Gripping Glacier Routes" presents a groundbreaking synthesis of scientific glacier research and practical mountaineering expertise, addressing the critical challenges faced by high-altitude climbers in an era of changing glacial conditions. This comprehensive guide uniquely bridges the gap between technical climbing skills and glaciology, offering evidence-based protocols derived from two decades of research across the world's major mountain ranges, including the Alps, Andes, and Himalayas.

The book systematically develops its content through three interconnected sections, beginning with fundamental principles of glacier formation and movement, incorporating recent climate data that affects traditional climbing routes. Readers then explore detailed climbing techniques specific to various ice conditions, supported by equipment studies and real-world accident analyses. The final section provides comprehensive expedition planning guidance, including weather interpretation and risk assessment protocols, making the content particularly valuable for both professional mountaineers and serious recreational climbers.

What sets this guide apart is its innovative integration of scientific data with practical applications, using actual expedition experiences to illustrate complex concepts. Through detailed case studies and documented field research, the book offers specific protocols for assessing ice stability, selecting appropriate equipment, and planning rescue procedures. This approach makes advanced glaciology concepts accessible while maintaining the technical accuracy necessary for safe high-altitude glacier travel, particularly relevant for those planning extended trips on glaciated terrain above 3,000 meters.

What does it mean to feel awe in an age when every corner of the planet can be seen from a screen?
In A Geography of Wonder, celebrated travel writer Reece Davis sets out on a deeply personal quest — to rediscover the feeling that first drew him to the road: wonder. From Iceland’s volcanic deserts to the emerald jungles of Borneo, from silent Arctic nights to crowded city streets, Davis seeks out places and moments that still have the power to humble and astonish.
Along the way, he reflects on how wonder shapes our understanding of the world — and why, in a time of speed and certainty, slowing down to feel awe might be the greatest act of exploration left.
Blending rich travel narrative with philosophy and poetic insight, A Geography of Wonder is a celebration of curiosity, reverence, and the untamed beauty that still beats within the human spirit.

Rome. What do you associate with this city? - Do you think Rome is the Eternal City? The city that you feel has always been there? The city that fascinated and accompanied you in your Latin lessons? Is Rome for you the city where the ancient Romans strolled across the Roman Forum and gladiators fought fierce battles in the Colosseum? Would you like to get to know the city where the great emperors such as Caesar or Augustus ruled and do you dream of one day walking in the footsteps of Romulus and Remus, the founding fathers of Rome?Or do you think: Rome? - That's the Holy City, where the Pope resides and which has long attracted and enthralled pilgrims, so that you always feel like you're missing out on something 'divine' and 'healing' if you've never been there?Thomas Mann once said: 'See Venice and die'. But let's be honest, wouldn't he have been much better off saying: 'See Rome and die'? Because there's something about this city that you never forget once you've been there.

My Family and Other Enemies is part travelogue, part memoir that dives into the hinterland of Croatia. Mary Novakovich explores her ongoing relationship with the region of Lika in central Croatia, where her parents were born. 'Lika is little known to most travellers - apart from Plitvice Lakes National Park and the birthplace of Nikola Tesla' she says. 'It's a region of wild beauty that has been battered by centuries of conflict. Used as a buffer zone between the Habsburg and Ottoman empires for hundreds of years, Lika became a land of war and warriors. And when Yugoslavia started to disintegrate in 1991, it was here where some of the first shots were fired.' Shipped off to Lika as a child during the supposedly golden years of Tito to stay with relatives she barely knew, Novakovich has been revisiting Croatia ever since, researching the story of her family's often harrowing life: in 1941 her aunt was the only survivor of Serbs massacred by Croatian fascists; and her mother saved her grandmother from being buried alive when she was thought to be dead from typhus. Amidst adversity there is resilience and laughter, too, with plenty of light to balance the shade. Eccentric and entertaining characters abound, showing typically sardonic Balkan humour. And, this being the Balkans, much of daily life revolves around food, which features prominently. Throughout, aspects of Croatian history that relate to Lika are woven into the narrative to give the story some much-needed context. And in recounting her own family's tumultuous history, Novakovich opens up a world that is little known outside the Balkans, telling the stories of people whose experiences weren't widely reported at the time, when the devastation in Croatia was superseded by the Bosnian conflict and media attention moved elsewhere.
