With Boston to the north and New York City to the south, Connecticut's history of organized crime is often overlooked. This is the untold story of New Haven's illegal past.

One of America's most historic and enduring cities, New Haven has wrangled with a perpetual identity struggle, torn between worlds that occasionally converged in chaos and violence. In the 1930s, Connecticut became a region where Mafia families like the Genoveses, Gambinos, Colombos, and Patriarcas shared turf—working together with enough profits to go around or descending into open war to rival that experienced in any major city. Central to this conflict were three men who were, at different times, cautious allies or sworn nemeses. Representing the Genoveses, Midge Renault reigned supreme thanks to his reputation for wanton violence. Meanwhile, Colombo capo Ralph "Whitey" Tropiano maintained a lower profile, which belied his reputation as a vicious killer. But it was his lieutenant, Billy "The Wild Guy" Grasso, who ultimately rose to the top after joining the New England Patriarca Family, enjoying a short rule that ended with a murder plot that left him on the wrong end of a bullet.

The true story of "Mob Adjacent: A Family Memoir" follows an ordinary family's extraordinary life under the protection of the infamous Chicago Outfit. Take an acid trip down memory lane with brothers Jeffrey and Michael Gentile, Jr. as they discover a parallel world hidden behind a suburban facade. For them, "The Wonder Years" collides with "The Sopranos." Hoodlums and gangsters filter in and out of their lives and home and easily as the milkman and the mailman. In their world, the guy who robs the bakery is as respected as the guy who bakes the bread. Blame it on the company they keep. Their father grew up among the next generation of post-Capone Chicago mobsters and kept them as trusted friends and honorary uncles to his children for the rest of his life. Mike Gentile, Sr. wasn’t IN the mob, but he was NEAR it – mob adjacent. "Mob Adjacent: A Family Memoir" presents a who’s who of Chicago crime bosses – Tony Accardo, Frank Nitti, Sam Giancana, Joe Lombardo, and an assortment of hoodlums, gangsters, bone breakers, loan sharks, and second-story guys, with celebrity cameo appearances by Frank Sinatra, Leo Durocher, Jackie Gleason, Art Carney, Joan Collins, Liza Minnelli, and Elizabeth Taylor. For the Gentile brothers, living mob adjacent delivers benefits and teaches lessons. Grab a front- row seat to as much real-life mob drama as a Martin Scorsese/Francis Ford Coppola movie marathon.
“A fascinating book…a fascinating read. Mob Adjacent will open your eyes.” – Rick Kogan, Chicago Tribune
“You cannot put it down. You want a Netflix series, this is it.” -- Roe Conn, WGN Radio

Together We Can - 33 Marathons...

Together We Can is the inspiring story of an amazing feat. On 1st of December 2024, at the age of 58, Peter Baines set off in the extreme heat and humidity from the north of Thailand to run 1400km over 26 days, averaging 60kms per day. Peter's goal was to raise $1 million. Peter Baines had been a leading forensic investigator with the NSW Police before he was deployed to Bali in 2002 after the bombings, and then to Thailand after the Boxing Day tsunami. It was during the aftermath of the tsunami that Peter started the Hands Across the Water charity. The biggest impact upon Peter during his work in Thailand was meeting a group of Thai children orphaned by the tsunami. Returning to Australia, Baines made a commitment to support these 32 children who were living in the tent in the grounds of a Buddhist temple. The initial objective of the Hands Across the Water was to build a home for these children, and it was this first home that marked the finishing line of the Run to Remember, exactly 20 years to the day of the tsunami. Together We Can is not a story of one man s 20-year commitment to children and communities in need. Nor is it simply a story of physical achievement the likes of which many simply cannot comprehend. It is the celebration of what can be achieved together. It is the celebration of the best of humanity, through what were often the most difficult times. One of the main learnings from this incredible feat of endurance (running the equivalent of 33 marathons in 26 days) was that although Peter was the only person who completed the run, it took a team to get him across the finishing line. The lessons are invaluable for businesses, organisations and sports teams and it is these lessons that remain with Peter (and hopefully the reader) long after the blisters have healed.

A Handful of Raisins is a heart-stirring memoir about survival, strength and courage. For Michèle Misino de Luca, life began as a series of dark, traumatic episodes and continued as deeply challenging events beset her incessantly throughout her youth. Yet somehow, she rises to value life, viewing it as a miracle. She was five years old when she first felt completely on her own, and although food, clothing and a warm bed were provided, it seemed her survival was not ensured. Every night, when she was handed those raisins, there was a moment of intimacy in her soul. She ate those raisins ever so slowly, savoring not just their sweetness, but the sweetness of a few moments when everything was alright. Imagine being a child seemingly dropped into a dark hole. Nothing around you but strangers. Nothing familiar. Throughout this memoir, readers will gain a true understanding of loneliness and despair, while receiving the gratifying reminder that you do not have to succumb and be formed by your painful experiences. You can become who you say you are, and who you say you are can be based on what you value most. Our author declares herself fully alive and becomes so alive with dignity, wonder and joy. In her groundbreaking and raw story, Michèle Misino de Luca had the tenacity not only to survive, but to thrive. Unwilling to surrender to victimhood, she had to change. She had to find joy. It certainly was not easy, but in a world by herself, she created her own silver lining. This is a memoir about celebrating the fullness of life, written by a truly extraordinary person. This is a story about seeking and accepting the handful of raisins in an otherwise empty room.
