Sinopsis

This book is about a great and rousing story of the last of the Viking kings, with truly incredible adventures. The highlight is not the language with flowery flourishes, but with jolting, abrupt changes in plot. There is no inner-dialogue, and the dialogue between characters is direct but halting, with little fluidity. It is obvious that this is an ancient text and a translation.

This is not a book about archaeological sites. We shall come across flint tools, bones, skulls, surprising structures, and layers of earth that we can date to different periods—but they are not the heart of the matter. This book is about us, human beings, and about our place in the world. About what we have done, where we came from, which other humans used to be here, why they are no longer with us, and how and why our lives have changed. It's also about where we went wrong. What did early humans do because they had no choice and what is the price we are paying for this now?

Taking as the focus ten sites in Israel, the land corridor through which the human species passed on its journey from Africa to Europe, the story ranges far and wide from France, Spain, Turkey, and Georgia to Morocco and South Africa, North America, Columbia, and Peru. The authors follow the footsteps of our ancestors, describing the tools they used, the animals they hunted and the monuments they built.

This provocative and panoramic book shows listeners what they can learn from their ancestors, and how the unwavering ability of prehistoric people to survive and thrive can continue into the present.

Why this holiday season is a great time to rethink the traditional turkey feast

A turkey is the centerpiece of countless Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. Yet most of us know almost nothing about today's specially bred, commercially produced birds. In this brief book, bestselling author Peter Singer tells their story—and, unfortunately, it's not a happy one. Along the way, he also offers a brief history of the turkey and its consumption, ridicules the annual US presidential "pardon" of a Thanksgiving turkey, and introduces us to "a tremendously handsome, outgoing, and intelligent turkey" named Cornelius. Above all, Singer explains how we can improve our holiday tables—for turkeys, people, and the planet—by liberating ourselves from the traditional turkey feast. In its place, he encourages us to consider trying a vegetarian alternative—or just serving the side dishes that many people already enjoy far more than turkey. Consider the Turkey will make you reconsider what you serve for your next holiday meal—or even tomorrow's dinner.

"The Temptation of St. Antony" by Gustave Flaubert is a visionary exploration of faith, doubt, and the human psyche. The story follows St. Antony, a hermit in the desert, as he endures a night of supernatural trials and temptations orchestrated by demonic visions. Flaubert delves into Antony’s inner struggles, confronting themes of desire, despair, and the search for divine truth. Through vivid imagery and philosophical depth, the work examines the tension between earthly passions and spiritual devotion. A blend of mysticism and existential inquiry, it reflects Flaubert’s fascination with the complexities of belief and the soul’s resilience. This poetic masterpiece challenges readers to ponder the boundaries of faith and the eternal battle between good and evil.
