The Second World War was the most destructive and widespread war to date. The darkest of evils called for the bravest of the brave to step forward and defend the free world.

Millions of people lost their lives, millions suffered physical and mental affects. This wasn’t a time for just the brave few, it was a time of global challenge and almost everybody stepped up to the mark. And so, why should it be that those stars and celebrities of stage and screen should be exempt? The truth is that a great many not only took the challenge of war, but volunteered for it and shone as if they were giving the greatest of performances.

This is the surprising story of those showbiz soldiers who cast aside their cares for fame and fortune and joined the millions of gallant men and women around the world in the battle against tyranny.

For many, the Rus might be synonyms for Russia or Russians, perhaps an early form of the civilization that later became Russia. This is partly true. Modern-day Russia lays claim as a successor to the Rus, particularly the Kievan Rus empire that dominated, with oscillating borders, the area around today’s Kiev and Ukraine between the 8th and 11th centuries. Crucially, the Rus had roots in the Nordic region. Initially, they would travel into modern-day Russia, Ukraine, and beyond to trade. Only later would they start to settle in the region and then become known as the Rus.
As with many other groups, the origins of the Rus are tied to the dominance of the Vikings over Western Europe in the early part of the Dark Ages or Medieval Era. Their Scandinavian brethren also traveled eastwards, behaving in similar ways but ultimately settling and assimilating in the region in an idiosyncratic manner. The Rus focused on several trade routes. The most important of these was the “eastern” route towards the Caspian Sea and stretching as far as Baghdad in the Middle East. This then gave way to the “western” route leading through Kiev to the Black Sea and Byzantine capital city Constantinople. The Rus also developed other trade routes, including to Western Europe.
Eventually, the Rus began to establish permanent settlements, firstly in Novgorod and then south to Kiev. This will be accompanied by the exploration of growing Rus dominance of this region, particularly through historical figures in the Rurikid dynasty such as Rurik, Oleg, Igor, Olga, Svyatoslav, Vladimir, and Yaroslav. During this time, the Kievan Rus empire was established and rose steadily to become a major regional power, even challenging the dominant Byzantines.

In The Enablers: How the West Supports Kleptocrats and Corruption — Endangering Our Democracy, Frank Vogl delivers a gripping and deeply researched exposé that reveals how Western institutions—banks, law firms, accountants, lobbyists, and even art dealers—play a pivotal role in empowering some of the world’s most corrupt regimes.

With decades of experience in international finance and anti-corruption advocacy, Vogl traces the hidden networks that allow dictators and oligarchs to launder vast fortunes through Western financial systems. He exposes how these enablers turn a blind eye, profiting from secrecy while weakening democratic institutions and global stability.

Clear, urgent, and compelling, The Enablers challenges listeners to confront the uncomfortable truth: corruption isn’t just a foreign problem—it’s being fueled from within our own economies. Essential listening for anyone concerned about ethics, global justice, and the future of democracy.
