Interweaving literature, history, and religion, an exquisite meditation on the turning of the seasons in medieval England.

Winters in the World is a beautifully observed journey through the cycle of the year in Anglo-Saxon England, exploring the festivals, customs, and traditions linked to the different seasons. Drawing on a wide variety of source material, including poetry, histories, and religious literature, Eleanor Parker investigates how Anglo-Saxons felt about the annual passing of the seasons and the profound relationship they saw between human life and the rhythms of nature. Many of the festivals celebrated in the United Kingdom today have their roots in the Anglo-Saxon period, and this book traces their surprising history while unearthing traditions now long forgotten. It celebrates some of the finest treasures of medieval literature and provides an imaginative connection to the Anglo-Saxon world.

Begin the journey to freedom, even when the way is uncertainFreedom isn’t a distant, political goal, but rather something we can practice right now, argues organizer, artist, and co-host of the podcast How to Survive the End of the World Autumn Brown. Drawing on the ancestral wisdom of Harriet Tubman and other fugitives, the lineage of Black Feminism, and the discipline of martial arts, Brown teaches us how to temper our bodies and spirits for this resilient practice of freedom—exactly where we are. In this urgent and soulful book, Autumn teaches us to:• Shift from a fugue state of trauma-induced dissociation to a fugitive state of alertness and agency to navigate the ever-changing world.• Stop the exhausting attempt to control your environment and start the practice of conditioning your body and spirit for the unknown.• Discover how your deepest sources of pain can connect you with ancestral wisdom and other discredited ways of knowing.• Experience how falling apart together during times of collapse can create a sense of life-saving connectedness.Autumn writes, “We ask ourselves, with every choice we make, how are we building capacity, fortitude, strength, intuition, and resilience that births a future freedom we could all live and thrive in?” Step onto the fugitive path and discover the truth: you were made for this crossing.

Any exploration of the lives of women in Classical Athens has to take into consideration the legal framework which governed such matters as marriage, inheritance and basic rights within society, as well as the woman, herself, within the oikos. However, as a starting point, the simple issues relating to the day to day lives of the women in this period provide an initial understanding of how all of these other factors played a part in the overall pattern of life for at least a Classical Athenian upper class woman. The lives of lower and middle class women, as well as those that did not fall into the defined social hierarchy, were markedly different from that of their aristocratic sisters in some respects. Underlying, however, for all women, was an attitude that sought to keep them apolitical, segregated and secluded as much as was practically possible.
Sparta will forever be known for its military prowess, but they had lives off the battlefield as well, and their way of life was also unique. For example, Spartan females were formally educated, which was a rarity among the city-states. Athenian girls were married at 14 to husbands they had never met, whereas Spartan girls married in their late teens or twenties. Athenian women were expected to stay indoors, be segregated from men, remain uneducated, and be silent, while Spartan women trained in athletics, exercised in public in scant clothing or none at all, owned property in their own names, and spoke their minds. By the 4th century B.C., according to Aristotle, they owned 40% of the land across the entire polis, and they were credited by foreign observers with influence over their husbands that no other Greek women possessed. All that can be said for sure is that Sparta had a society in which the female half of the citizen population occupied a position more nearly equal to that of men than anywhere else in the ancient Mediterranean world.
