Beschreibung

Napoleon Bonaparte’s defeat in 1815 came at an inconvenient time for John Monk, an ambitious young naval officer. Forced to rethink his plans, John turned to the merchant service, where he encountered storms, shipwreck and even piracy as he traded between Liverpool and the Mediterranean through the 1830s and 1840s. ‘Bonaparte and Brimstone’ is the fascinating and engaging biography of a little-known Georgian naval lieutenant and mariner from Parkgate on the Wirral and brings him unforgettably to life. Vibrantly written, it is the beguiling story of one man’s hopes and fortunes, and is ultimately an emotional tale of family and belonging, enriched with abundant personal documents, among them the remarkable diary of a stormy voyage to Italy in 1824. John Monk saw ten years’ service across the seas of Europe and survived the horrific bloodshed on HMS Impregnable during the Bombardment of Algiers in 1816, but he grew dismayed at his lack of progress and battled the Admiralty just as he had once battled the French. ‘Bonaparte and Brimstone’ paints a portrait in miniature of British society in the nineteenth century and of the country’s seafarers who attempted to navigate a path through it.

Considered by many to be the most important philosopher ever, Plato was born into a well-to-do family in wartime Athens at the end of the fifth century BCE. He finally decided to go into politics, but became disillusioned, especially after the Athenians condemned his teacher, Socrates, to death. He began teaching in his twenties and later founded the Academy, the world's first higher-educational research and teaching establishment. Eventually, he returned to practical politics and spent a considerable amount of time and energy trying to create a constitution for Syracuse in Sicily that would reflect and perpetuate some of his political ideals. The attempts failed, and Plato's disappointment can be traced in some of his later political works.

In his lifetime and after, Plato was considered almost divine. This led to the invention of many tall tales about him-both by those who adored him and his detractors. In this first ever full-length portrait of Plato, Robin Waterfield steers a judicious course among these stories, debunking some while accepting the kernels of truth in others. He explains why Plato chose to write dialogues rather than treatises and gives an overview of the subject matter of all of Plato's books. Clearly and engagingly written throughout, Plato of Athens is the perfect introduction to the man and his work.

Not many women can claim to have changed history, but Nafis Sadik set that goal in her youth, and change the world she did. Champion of Choice tells the remarkable story of how Sadik, born into a prominent Indian family in 1929, came to be the world’s foremost advocate for women’s health and reproductive rights, the first female director of a United Nations agency, and “one of the most powerful women in the world” (London Times).

An obstetrician, wife, mother, and devout Muslim, Sadik has been a courageous and tireless advocate for women, insisting on discussing the difficult issues that impact their lives: education, contraception, abortion, as well as rape and other forms of violence. After Sadik joined the fledgling UN Population Fund in 1971, her groundbreaking strategy for providing females with education and the tools to control their own fertility has dramatically influenced the global birthrate. This book is the first to examine Sadik’s contribution to history and the unconventional methods she has employed to go head-to-head with world leaders to improve millions of women’s lives.

Interspersed between the chapters recounting Sadik’s life are vignettes of females around the globe who represent her campaign against domestic abuse, child marriage, genital mutilation, and other human rights violations. With its insights into the political, religious, and domestic battles that have dominated women’s destinies, Sadik’s life story is as inspirational as it is dramatic.

Named one of the American Library Association’s Top Ten 2013 Biographies

"Extensively researched, Miller’s engrossing biography illuminates Sadik’s formidable passion for [women’s] issues, most notably through crystalline vignettes about women from Kenya to Kosovo whose individual narratives transformed Sadik’s mission into a personal commitment."

"Coming to the Kṛṣṇa Bhakti-Yoga tradition, especially the Gaudiya Vaisnavas from India I found shelter and made friends with the Hare Kṛṣṇa lifestyle and movement. Yoga means "Union" or "to link up", this refers to the Absolute Truth which comes in a personal and impersonal form. This wisdom of Yoga is manifested in the Vedas, the Word of God. The Vedas discuss Polymorphic Bi-Monotheism, a unique Supreme God who is apparent in Radha-Kṛṣṇa, the divine couple, manifesting in many forms. Studying this tradition is fun and practical. It turned my personal life around and became my life and soul. For example, learning Sanskrit, the Mother of all Languages is great joy. Śraddhā is a Sanskrit term and refers to the root of this tree of Kṛṣṇa consciousness. How can one believe in such a wonderful theology?"
