Synopsis

"Timbuktu Learning Centers" explores how Timbuktu, a city strategically positioned within the trans-Saharan trade network, became a prominent center for Islamic scholarship and intellectual life. It examines the deliberate cultivation of learning that transformed Timbuktu into a rival to renowned centers in Europe and the Middle East. The book details the organization of mosques and madrasas, the creation and preservation of vast manuscript libraries, and the unique traditions of Islamic education that fostered critical thinking. By examining digitized manuscripts, historical chronicles, and biographical accounts of scholars, the book argues that Timbuktu's intellectual flourishing was a sustained effort, not merely a consequence of trade.

The book progresses by first situating Timbuktu within its historical and geographical context, highlighting its economic prosperity. It then investigates the social and political structures supporting the scholarly community, including the patronage of rulers. The text analyzes the curricula, teaching methods, and intellectual contributions of scholars at major institutions like the Sankore Mosque. This detailed approach offers a comprehensive understanding of how Timbuktu's manuscript libraries became repositories of knowledge spanning Islamic law, astronomy, medicine, and literature, demonstrating the city's lasting legacy in Islamic scholarship and West African history.

As a member of the "New Thought" movement, Henry Harrison Brown (1840 - 1918) founded the periodical "NOW". In this magazine, he first published his most famous essay "Dollars want me!" Brown presented positive affirmations which inevitably attract money and financial independence. Easy, concise, to the point: Brown states that without man, money is nothing. Therefore, money seeks man to fulfill its duty. All man needs to do is to prepare mentally - and financial freedom will be the result. Extremely interesting and highly entertaining!

We all have a natural emotional healing process, just as we do a natural physical healing process within us. When we get a wound, our bodies' natural healing process takes care of it. When emotionally painful events occur in our lives, we usually manage to overcome them and move on with our lives. On the other hand, a cut does not always heal until it has been cleaned and an antibiotic has been applied. Similarly, when something emotionally upsetting occurs, the brain's processing system isn't always able to absorb it and put it into the context of our entire lives without assistance. Sometimes we are completely unaware of what is going on.Although the image of the incident may not come to us consciously, we may feel unworthy, sad, afraid, or nauseous. We may be unaware that we are being swamped with dysfunctionally stored material from the past. We may act in ways we later regret and not wholly comprehend why. The EMDR method recognizes that you aren't reacting on purpose; the triggered memories are at the root of your actions that aren't consistent with who you are now. EMDR can assist the brain's processing system repair emotional wounds in the same way that an antibiotic ointment can help cure a cut. It's still your own internal process conducting the healing; EMDR simply "jump starts" it when it's needed and speeds it up.Once the isolated "land mine" of trauma has been reprocessed using EMDR, it is neutralized, meaning it will no longer go off and flood into the present. It's woven into the fabric of your existence, so it appears to be over and cannot derail you from your current state of bliss. The information appears to be stimulated, and the brain can reprocess the situation due to eye movements or other bilateral stimulation. Eye movements are only a tiny part of EMDR. In processing traumatic memories, current concerns, or future fears, integrates imagery, beliefs, emotions, and physical sensations.

A human history of one of the planet's most iconic lakes, and the civilizations that surrounded its shores

The Dead Sea is a place of many contradictions. Hot springs around the lake are famed for their healing properties, though its own waters are deadly to most lifeforms—even so, civilizations have built ancient cities and hilltop fortresses around its shores for centuries. The protagonists in its story are not only Jews and Arabs, but also Greeks, Nabataeans, Romans, Crusaders and Mamluks. Today it has become a tourist hotspot, but its drying basin is increasingly under threat.

In this panoramic account, Nir Arielli explores the history of the Dead Sea from the first Neolithic settlements to the present day. Moving through the ages, Arielli reveals the religious, economic, military, and scientific importance of the lake, which has been both a source of great wealth and a site of war. The Dead Sea weaves together a tapestry of the lake's human stories—and amidst environmental degradation and renewed conflict, makes a powerful case for why it should be saved.
