Synopsis

FINALIST FOR THE 2023 DOROTHY LIVESAY POETRY PRIZE
Ways of Seeing meets Mary Ruefle in these visual-art-inflected poems
Though they started from Sheryda Warrener’s impulse to see herself more clearly, the poems in Test Piece ended up becoming more expansive meditations on seeing and vision. They engage with the process and practice of art-making, and specifically with abstract minimalist works like those by Eva Hesse, Anne Truitt, Ruth Asawa, and Agnes Martin.
Not-seeing/not-knowing is a motif, as is weave, grid, pattern, rhythm of interiors, domestic life. These poems are informed by collage, by the act of bringing images and lines together. With their echoes and reverberations (hand, mirror, body, clear, form, face), a greater complexity is revealed.
"In conversation with visual art, mirrors, and the traces of self we assemble through encounter, Sheryda Warrener’s Test Piece holds an expansive place to dwell with the phenomenological. Interacting with event and object, reflection and parataxis, the writing asks us to consider contingent spaces and the matter of matter and meaning making. The poems adhere as arrangement, as a consideration of relationality. 'What does she whimper in the dog’s ear? / How earthly we behave, believing we’re alone.'" – Hoa Nguyen, author of A Thousand Times You Lose Your Treasure
"Sheryda Warrener's newest poetry collection unspools as a complex weave of repeated motifs, ritualistic gestures, and deeply embodied observations. I’m especially struck by the influence of twentieth-century women artists within the collection: meditations on Eva Hesse, Agnes Martin, and Sherrie Levine’s works structure much of Test Piece. Palimpsests of photographed interiors, where living and writing collide lyrically and randomly, combine with floating textual cut-ups of variegating transparency. This concretizes, perhaps, how the poems bloom forth from experimental assemblage: 'her body holds/the long blue sentence of it…'" – Marina Roy, artist and author of Queuejumping

This book is all about the simplicity of our ability as humans to simply be...at ease. Maybe you're on your way to work. Maybe you're soaking in a hot tub-with or without the bubbles. Maybe you're driving on a road trip, or, God forbid, stuck in traffic. Or you're the running sort, headphones or earbuds taking you to another plain of existence as you traverse the miles. Or, maybe, just maybe, you're sitting in silence and letting these words take you on an out-of-body experience. In any of those cases, "Things To Read Before You Sleep" is my first foray into that challenging minefield called poetry. This book gives life and character to both inanimate objects-such as a simple shoe-and scary subjects, like darkness. The metaphysical world of dreaming, and, of course, what would any book of poetry be without addressing that age-old, soul-encapsulating emotion called...love. It may be less than an hour long, but I hope it's a listening journey that takes you wherever it is you'd like to be and leaves you changed forever. I'm currently creating artwork for all of poems in this audiobook. Believe me, it's going to be a thing of beauty. Thank you.

A classic in the Bukowski poetry canon, Love Is a Dog from Hell is a raw, lyrical, exploration of the exigencies, heartbreaks, and limits of love.
A book that captures the Dirty Old Man of American letters at his fiercest and most vulnerable, on a subject that hits home with all of us. Charles Bukowski was a man of intense emotions, someone an editor once called a “passionate madman.” Alternating between tough and gentle, sensitive and gritty, Bukowski lays bare the myriad facets of love—its selfishness and its narcissism, its randomness, its mystery and its misery, and, ultimately, its true joyfulness, endurance, and redemptive power.
""there is a loneliness in this world so great
that you can see it in the slow movement of
    the hands of a clock.""

Timothy Nonn lost his sight to glaucoma over a period of ten years. He has written poetry that reflects his journey from sight to blindness. His poems are hauntingly beautiful as he learns to see the world in a new way, not with his eyes but with his heart.
According to Timothy, “These poems reflect my own experience of losing my eyesight later in life. I am not attempting to speak for other people who are blind and have different life experiences. Hopefully, both the blind and the sighted will find some measure of commonality in my poems.”

Prayer is universal. It is common to all cultures and all religions. It is the way we reach out to the Divine.
I think of prayer as a clay urn we lower hand over hand into the well of our hearts, the well that opens to the unlimited water table of blessings.
There are different reasons we go the well. There are dark times when we face doubt and loss. There are times when the fire of inspiration lifts our minds and hearts to a new possibility. And there are times when we celebrate the feeling of being at one with all around us.
The Prayer Beads is divided into three sections: Poems for the Dark Night; Poems for Renewal; and Poems for the Harvest.
I encourage you to linger on each poem as if it were a prayer bead, to linger on each poem until you feel it in your fingertips.

'A woman. On the line in Gallery Two of all places. I never thought I'd see the day. This is progress, my dear.'
It's 1874, and Elizabeth Thompson stuns the artistic establishment with her painting The Roll Call. Five years later, she falls two votes short of becoming the first woman elected to the Royal Academy.
In between, she shoulders the hopes and dreams of female artists across the country, while fighting for her place at a table full of top hats, neckties and mutton chop beards.
A thrilling collision of music hall, cabaret and drag king swagger, Modest tells the true story of a pioneering megastar of the Victorian art scene. Written by Ellen Brammar and with music by Rachel Barnes, it was first produced in 2023 by Middle Child in collaboration with Milk Presents at Hull Truck Theatre before touring.
