The role of the rheumatologist is to evaluate and manage these disorders, aiming to reduce symptoms, prevent disease progression, and improve the quality of life for patients. 
  Rheumatic diseases encompass a wide range of conditions, some of which are common and others rare. Among the most prevalent are diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and gout. These disorders can range in severity from mild joint discomfort to life-threatening systemic inflammation, often involving multiple organs. The key characteristic of many rheumatic diseases is the involvement of the immune system in causing inflammation and damage to the body’s tissues. 
  One of the hallmarks of rheumatology is its emphasis on autoimmunity. In autoimmune diseases, the body's immune system mistakenly attacks its own tissues, considering them foreign. This immune dysregulation is often the root cause of many rheumatic conditions, and understanding the immune mechanisms at play is crucial for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment. The immune response can lead to chronic inflammation, tissue damage, and, over time, the destruction of joints and other vital structures.
