In a world grappling with the consequences of excessive waste and environmental degradation, composting stands out as one of the simplest and most effective ways individuals and communities can contribute to a healthier planet. At its core, composting is the natural process of recycling organic material—like food scraps and yard waste—into a rich soil amendment known as compost. This humble, earth-toned substance plays a vital role in soil health, water retention, and carbon sequestration, while helping to dramatically reduce the volume of waste that ends up in landfills.
Despite its long history—used by ancient civilizations to nourish crops—composting has often been overlooked in modern society. Yet today, as climate concerns rise and people seek more sustainable lifestyles, interest in composting is surging once again. Whether you’re a gardener hoping to enrich your soil, a city dweller looking to reduce your waste footprint, or a teacher introducing environmental concepts to students, composting offers a powerful tool for change.
This book was written to guide you through every step of that process. Whether you're just starting out with a backyard bin or looking to scale up to community-level or even commercial systems, The Composting Handbook is designed to offer both the practical advice and scientific insight you need to compost confidently and successfully. You'll learn how to choose the right composting method for your space and lifestyle, how to troubleshoot common issues like odor or pests, and how to turn finished compost into a resource that nourishes plants and restores soil vitality.

Dreamtime, also known as "The Dreaming," is the foundational concept of Aboriginal culture and spirituality. It is a complex, multifaceted belief system that encompasses creation stories, spiritual teachings, and an understanding of the interconnectedness of all life. Dreamtime is not confined to a particular period in history but is viewed as an ongoing reality, a state of being that transcends time and exists both in the past and in the present. For Aboriginal people, Dreamtime is both a spiritual truth and a living tradition that shapes their worldview, guiding their actions, relationships, and understanding of the natural world.
The significance of Dreamtime lies in its ability to explain the origins of the world, the laws governing life, and the connection between humans, animals, plants, and the land. At its core, Dreamtime is a spiritual map, describing the creation of the earth, the formation of natural features, and the roles of various creator beings. These beings, often depicted as animals, deities, or ancestral spirits, shaped the land, created life, and established the laws of existence. Through Dreamtime stories, Aboriginal people understand their place within the larger web of life, their responsibilities toward the environment, and the moral code they follow to maintain balance and harmony.

The Kushan Empire, one of the most influential powers in Central and South Asia, originated from the nomadic Yuezhi people. The Yuezhi were an Indo-European group that initially resided in the western regions of China, near the Tarim Basin. However, in the 2nd century BCE, they were forced to migrate westward due to conflicts with the Xiongnu, a dominant steppe confederation. This migration led them into Central Asia, where they eventually settled in the Bactrian region, which had previously been under Greek influence following the campaigns of Alexander the Great.
Over time, the Yuezhi tribes consolidated their power, and by the 1st century CE, one of their clans, the Kushans, emerged as the dominant force. Kujula Kadphises, the first major ruler of the Kushan Dynasty, is credited with unifying the fragmented Yuezhi groups and establishing the foundation of the empire. Under his leadership, the Kushans expanded their influence, incorporating regions of modern-day Afghanistan, Pakistan, and northern India. His military campaigns against the remnants of the Indo-Greek and Indo-Scythian kingdoms allowed the Kushans to gain control over crucial trade routes, solidifying their position as a major power in the region.
The early political structure of the Kushan Empire reflected its nomadic roots while incorporating elements from the civilizations it encountered. The rulers maintained a centralized authority but allowed local governance to continue in many areas, a practice that helped integrate diverse cultural and ethnic groups into the empire. This pragmatic approach to governance enabled the Kushans to sustain their rule over a vast and multicultural domain.

Following the success of Go the F**k to Sleep, Confessions of a Scary Mommy, and Ketchup Is a Vegetable, a collection of funny, warm, and charmingly profane tales from the frontlines of parenthood by the author of the popular Baby Sideburns blog.
Once upon a time you and your partner had a perfect life: dinners out, weekend mornings cuddling in bed, brunch with friends. Then you gave birth to a poop machine (or two). Now, it's all about the pediatrician, breast pumps, princess dresses, and minivans. And discovering that your pride and joy is actually a little A-hole.
When your son wakes you up at 3:00 A.M. because he wants to watch Caillou, he's an a-hole. When your daughter outlines every corner of your living room with a purple crayon, she's an a-hole. When your rug rats purposely paint the kitchen ceiling with their smoothies, they're a-holes. At times like these, it's only natural to want to kill them (or yourself). But it's against the law (and there's the suicide hotline). Plus, there's that whole loving them more than anything in the whole world thing.
In I Heart My Little A-Holes, Karen Alpert shares hilarious stories, lists, and deep thoughts on the joys and horrors of raising children. Accompanied by cheery illustrations and photos I Heart My Little A-Holes will make you laugh so hard you'll wish you were wearing a diaper.
