Summary

Shambhu dasa, a direct disciple of Srila Prabhupada, became inspired by two essential, recurring themes in Srila Prabhupada’s books: First, the importance of attaining a human birth and utilizing it properly, and secondly, the immense sukrti or pious credits by taking birth in Bharata-Varsha or India and its subsequent opportunities. Although Srila Prabhupada’s causeless mercy from his own spiritual master brought him to the Western shores of a bustling, chaotic New York City in the mid-60s for preaching his spiritual master’s message, his satisfied heart still yearned for his true home in Sri Vrindavana Dhama, the birthplace of Lord Krishna. His self-determination in spreading this vital message led him to a successful life, both here and for eternity. Srila Prabhupada took that prabhu-desha -order to heart, travelled to America, and finally, Krishna empowered him to establish the divine, personal connection of bhakti-yoga and spread this panacea all over the world.
Throughout this book Shambhu Prabhu presents and highlights some great "Jewels" of Instructions given by Srila Prabhupada and the various scriptures (shastra) that will surely encourage any reader to see how fortunate they are granted this rare life as a human being, whether In India Bharat-Varsha or anywhere on this planet (Earth).

An engaging exploration into the enduring popularity of Dirty Dancing and its lasting themes of feminism, activism, and reproductive rights

When Dirty Dancing was released in 1987, it had already been rejected by producers and distributors several times over, and expectations for the summer romance were low. But then the film, written by former dancer Eleanor Bergstein and starring Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze as a couple from two different worlds, exploded. Since then, Dirty Dancing’s popularity has never waned. The truth has always been that Dirty Dancing was never just a teen romance or a dance movie — it also explored abortion rights, class, and political activism, with a smattering of light crime-solving.

In The Time of My Life, celebrated music journalist Andrea Warner excavates the layers of Dirty Dancing, from its anachronistic, chart-topping soundtrack, to Baby and Johnny’s chemistry, to Bergstein’s political intentions, to the abortion subplot that is more relevant today than ever. The film’s remarkable longevity would never have been possible if it was just a throwaway summer fling story. It is precisely because of its themes — deeply feminist, sensitively written — that we, over 30 years later, are still holding our breath during that last, exhilarating lift.

    Emma Goldman

Relive the tumult and bloodshed of the early Soviet years from the eyes of Emma Goldman.
As a student of history, some of us wonder about anarchism and communism coexisting at the same time. Emma Goldman
witnessed chaos and bloodshed from both.
Emma Goldman (June 27, 1869 – May 14, 1940) was a Lithuanian-born anarchist revolutionary, political activist, and writer. She played a pivotal role in the development of anarchist political philosophy in North America and Europe in the first half of the 20th century.
Born in Kaunas, Lithuania (then within the Russian Empire), to an Orthodox Lithuanian Jewish family, Goldman immigrated to the United States in 1885.[Attracted to anarchism after the Chicago Haymarket affair, Goldman became a writer and a renowned lecturer on anarchist philosophy, women's rights and social issues.
Some years ago Emma Goldman was deported from the United States and went to Russia to investigate personally what she believed to be the nearest approach to a Utopia which the world had yet produced.
Her experiences so thoroughly disillusioned her that she conceived it to be her duty to set forth these experiences and her conclusions, which she did in a book entitled “My Disillusionment in Russia.” The rights in this material she sold to an American newspaper syndicate from whom we purchased the book rights, and by whom we were furnished with the copy for the book. We published the book under date of October 26, 1923, and not until it was in circulation did we learn that it was minus the last twelve chapters which had never been turned over to us by the newspaper syndicate, nor had any intimation been given us that the copy turned over to us was incomplete. While the conclusion of the book as we published it was abrupt it was not{vi} more so than is frequently the case; and, therefore, there was no internal evidence to indicate its incompleteness.

A playful, analytical, informed, and poetic exploration of the delight and transformative power of real-life encounters.

The light touch of a hairdresser's hands on one's scalp, the euphoric energy of a nightclub, huddling with strangers under a shelter in the rain, a spontaneous snowball fight in the street, a daily interaction with a homeless man—such mundane connections, when we closely inhabit the same space, and touch or are touched by others, were nearly lost to "social distancing." Will we ever again shake hands without a thought?

In this deeply rewarding book, Andy Field brings together history, science, psychology, queer theory, and pop culture with his love of urban life and his own experiences—both as a city-dweller and as a performance artist—to forge creative connections: walking hand-in-hand with strangers, knocking on doors, staging encounters in parked cars. In considering twelve different kinds of encounters, from car rides to video calls to dog-walker chats in the park, Field argues "that in the spontaneity and joy of our meetings with each other, we might find the faint outline of a better future."
