Sinopsis

In 'The Wonderful Adventures of Nils,' Selma Lagerl√∂f weaves a captivating tale that blends elements of fantasy and realism to create a rich narrative journey through Sweden's landscapes. The book chronicles the adventures of Nils Holgersson, a disobedient boy transformed into a tiny sprite, who travels with a flock of wild geese. Lagerl√∂f's literary style is marked by lyrical prose and vivid imagery, reflecting the Swedish countryside'Äôs natural beauty and cultural folklore. Published in 1906, this children's classic reflects the literary context of early 20th-century Sweden, where national identity and nature were predominant themes, and it adds depth by exploring human connection to the environment through Nils's transformation and eventual redemption. Selma Lagerl√∂f, the first woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1909, was deeply inspired by her own childhood experiences and Swedish folklore. Growing up in the rural part of Sweden, Lagerl√∂f had a profound appreciation for her homeland's stories and traditions. Her passion for social justice and the human spirit is evident throughout her work, providing Nils with a sympathetic arc that triumphs over the selfishness of youth. This book is a must-read for audiences of all ages, as it not only entertains with its enchanting narrative but also imparts timeless lessons of humility, compassion, and the importance of nature. Lagerl√∂f's enchanting storytelling invites readers to embark on a journey of self-discovery, making 'The Wonderful Adventures of Nils' an enduring literary classic.

Thirteen-year-old Maya Beatriz Montenegro Calderon has vivid recurring dreams where she hears the ocean calling her. Mami’s side of the family is known as “Los Locos,” so maybe she actually is going crazy. But no time for that; the family business is where it’s at. Whenever Maya, her sister Salma, and her three cousins, Ini, Mini, and Mo, aren’t at school, you can usually find three generations of Calderones at Café Taza, serving up sandwiches de pernil, mofongo, and the best cafés con leche in all of Brooklyn.

One day, an unexpected visit from the estranged Titi Yaya from Puerto Rico changes everything. Because Yaya practices santería, Abuela tells Maya and the other Calderon children to stay away from her. But if la viejita is indeed estranged from the family, why does Maya feel so connected to this woman she has never met before? And who is this orisha named Yemaya? On top of all this, Maya has a budding soccer career to consider, while fending off the local bully, and dealing with nascent feelings toward her teammate. But through it all, there’s that alluring connection to a forbidden ancient practice—filled with a pantheon of Yoruba gods and goddesses—that keeps tugging at her, offering her a new perspective in life, and tying her past to her present and future. Which path will Maya choose to fulfill her destiny?

Small, feisty Siberian husky Togo—the overlooked sled-dog hero of the 1925 serum run to Nome—sets the record straight in Dog Diaries #4!

When a diptheria epidemic breaks out in isolated Nome, Alaska, in January 1925, the only way to get life-saving serum to the town is by using dog-sled relay teams. Twenty teams participate, and the dog who inevitably gets credit for saving the town is Balto, lead dog on the final team which delivered the serum. But few people have ever heard of twelve-year-old Togo and his musher Leonard Seppala, who carried the serum for almost double the length of any other team, and twice violated warnings to avoid perilous Norton Sound and instead ran straight over the frozen ice! Togo's tale is perfect for middle-grade readers who love a spunky underdog!

Winnie-the-Pooh is a children's book by English author A.A. Milne and English illustrator E.H. Shepard. Published in 1926, it is a collection of short stories about an anthropomorphic teddy bear, Winnie-the-Pooh, and his friends Christopher Robin, Piglet, Eeyore, Owl, Rabbit, Kanga, and Roo. It is the first of two story collections by Milne about Winnie-the-Pooh, the second being The House at Pooh Corner (1928).
Milne and Shepard collaborated previously for English humour magazine Punch, and in 1924 created When We Were Very Young, a poetry collection. Among the characters in the poetry book was a teddy bear Shepard modeled after his son's toy. Following this, Shepard encouraged Milne to write about his son Christopher Robin Milne's toys, and so they became the inspiration for the characters in Winnie-the-Pooh.
The book was well-received at release, and was a commercial success, selling 150,000 copies before the end of the year. Winnie-the-Pooh has been translated into over fifty languages; a 1958 Latin translation, Winnie ille Pu, was the first foreign-language book to be featured on the New York Times Best Seller List, and the only book in Latin ever to have been featured. The stories and characters in the book have been adapted in other media, most notably by Disney beginning with Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree (1966).
