Summary

Bizarre Legal Defenses explores the strange and often unbelievable world where criminal law meets the outer limits of human behavior. This true crime journey delves into the unusual strategies people have used in court to avoid conviction. From blaming actions on supernatural forces to claiming they were sleepwalking, these cases highlight the challenges inherent in determining culpability and understanding intent.

Many of these bizarre legal defenses hinge on expert testimony, particularly in cases involving the insanity defense, where forensic science and psychology play crucial roles. The book progresses by examining specific categories of defenses, such as psychological conditions and involuntary actions, offering detailed case studies and legal analyses.

One intriguing aspect covered is how sociological factors can influence the acceptance or rejection of these claims. The book provides a unique perspective by scrutinizing completed court cases, primarily from the 20th and 21st centuries, to reveal the limitations of legal constructs when applied to the complexities of human experience.

You may have read GG Alcock's books about the kasi economy; now follow his journey to the dynamic world of KasiNomics and learn about the tribal forces that shaped him.
Born White Zulu Bred is the story of a white child and his brother raised in poverty in a Zulu community in rural South Africa during the apartheid era. His extraordinary parents, Creina and Neil Alcock, gave up lives of comfort and privilege to live and work among the destitute people of Msinga, whose material and social well-being became their mission.
But more than that, this is a story about life in South Africa today which, through GG's unique perspective, explores the huge diversity of the country's people – from tribal Zulu warriors to sophisticated urban black township entrepreneurs. A journey from the arid wastes of Msinga into the thriving informal economies of urban townships.
GG's view is that we do not live in a black and white world but in a world of contrast and diversity, one which he wants South Africans, and a world audience, to see for what it is without descending into racial and historical clichés. He takes us through the mazes of township marketplaces, shacks and crowded streets to reveal the proud and dignified world of township entrepreneurs who are transforming South Africa's economy. This is the world that he moves in today as a successful businessman, still walking those spaces and celebrating the vibrant informal economies that are taking part in the KasiNomic Revolution.
GG's story is about being truly African, even as a white person, and it draws on the adventures, the cultural challenges, the informal spaces and the future possibilities of South Africa.

Diary of a Wartime Unmarried Mother

    Doreen Bates

This diary gives a remarkably vivid description of the life of Doreen Bates, a professional young woman, who went against the social norms of her time to intentionally have twins fathered by an older married, but childless, colleague in the Inland Revenue, where they both worked as Income Tax Inspectors. At the time the twins were born Doreen did not
know if their father could, or would, form part of the family. In the event, he was able to make frequent visits and helped practically, emotionally and financially with the childrens’ upbringing.

The diary commences a few months after the twins were born. Doreen lived with them and a live-in nanny in South London where they experienced relentless days and nights of enemy bombing. In 1944 the twins and their nanny were evacuated to the incomparably safer and beautiful rural setting of a Wiltshire village where Doreen joined them for every
    weekend.

In contrast to the chaos and fear that accompanied the wartime conditions, Doreen’s emotional life is much less turbulent than in the previous volume of her diary. This reflects the profound satisfaction she felt as a result of achieving her dream of having children. She was a remarkably enlightened parent. Her recording of their lives in this diary is detailed, intimate, and often humorous. Historical happenings are mentioned, but form only the incidental backdrop to her domestic and professional life.

“Brimming with soul, passion, candour and wit, the diaries of Doreen Bates are an
extraordinary read, giving a vivid insight into the life of a woman unvanquished by her time, a woman who leaps from the page so strikingly that you feel your pulse beating in time with hers. Edited in an act of great love and generosity by her children, they should take their place as one of the essential diaries of the twentieth century for the window
they offer into another world, another heart.”
