Summary

The Book of Hosea is generally considered one of the oldest surviving books of the Israelite Scriptures, with most scholars dating it to before the Torah was composed, or at least heavily redacted in the time of King Josiah. Most scholars accept that Hosea was written by a prophet called Hosea between 760 and 720 BCE, who was most likely from the region of Ephraim, in central modern Israel and the Palestinian West Bank. His world was very different from the later Kingdom of Judea that emerged in the 2nd century BCE, as the Israelites of his time were still polytheistic, worshiping the Canaanite gods, as well as statues of the calf god Yahweh, the God the Jews and Samaritans would later worship.By Hosea’s time, Samaria had fallen under the domination of the Neo-Assyrian Empire but had not been conquered outright yet. They fought a war of independence, now called the Syro-Ephraimite War, which they lost, ending up even more subjugated than they had previously been. Much of Hosea’s book is little more than an angry tirade directed at his own tribe, the Ephraimites, who had led the war. According to Hosea, his people had allied themselves to Egypt, the ancient enemy, which was one reason Lord the god did not save them, the other being that they were worshiping an idol of Yahweh, and El was very angry about that. The Kingdom of Judah, to the south of Samaria, had allied with Assyria and helped them conquer the Samaritans, likely because they were more worried about the expansion of the Egyptian Empire, their southern neighbor than they were about the expansion of the Assyrian Empire north of Samaria. This Assyrian-Judahite alliance held Egypt back for more than a century, until Pharaoh Necho II killed King Josiah in 709 BCE, and reorganized Judah as a puppet state. In the aftermath of their defeat in the Syro-Ephraimite War, many Israelites appear to have returned to worshiping the ancient Canaanite gods, implying they felt abandoned by El during the war. El, which means “God” in Hebrew, is also the name of the ancient Canaanite father of the gods, and husband of Asherah. The Temple of El is mentioned in many ancient Hebrew texts as having been in Shiloh, near the Temple of Ōn / Ảỏn, and Hosea repeatedly refers to “Lord the god” in the Septuagint’s version of his book, which clearly predates the Hebrew translation made during the Hasmonean dynasty, which replaced the Lord with Yahweh.

Yet Will I Trust Him is more than just a statement said by an ancient Biblical character. It is a statement that must be true in everyone who names the name of Jesus. It is easy to look at a statement like that and be inspired, but it takes on a whole different meaning when you have to live it. I want to share my story with you and explain exactly what I mean. I pray this book you hold in your hands will help you if you ever have to live out this most powerful statement of faith.
What if I told you it was my frustrations and disappointments that strengthened my relationship and faith in God? What if I told you it was not the blessings that made me love God more but his sustaining power in my trials that fueled my confidence in him? What if I told you that you can be happy and flourish without the things you thought you couldn’t live without?
In Yet Will I Trust Him, I will discuss the things God showed me in the midst of my greatest tragedies. This is not a normal story, but it is my story. It is full of priceless revelation that came out of costly experiences. I pray that as you read this book, possibly from your fiery furnace or your lion’s den, you experience Jesus in a way that will change your life and encourage you forever. Everything may be going great for you now. I pray this book helps you if at any moment a storm rises up and threatens to shake your faith.
If you question if God is good all the time, this book is for you. God is always at work and is always speaking. Are we watching and listening?

Jesus warned that deception would grow worse as we draw nearer to the end times, saying, "Take heed that no one deceives you" (Matthew 24:4). Distinguishing truth from error has become an increasingly challenging task—even in the church.

We live in a time when falsehoods assault us from every direction. Packaged with just enough truth to make them appear trustworthy, these counterfeits have grown more and more difficult to detect and avoid.

Living in the Daze of Deception explores the many ways error is masquerading as truth—and how you can discern the difference. From pastor Jack Hibbs, you'll learn the characteristics of deceivers and how they have brought harm to both secular culture and the church; the many deceptions that are altering and replacing the truth, and how to recognize them; and the keys to standing strong as the spiritual battles surrounding us intensify.

The greatest antidote to deception is truth. Equip yourself now to grow in discernment so that you can protect yourself from error and remain steadfast in your faith!
