"These were events which prefigured and did much to shape the political battles of the last half century, the devolution half century in Wales. They shaped the non-nationalist, but distinctive Welsh social democratic preferences of the last sixty years. For anyone interested in the formative moments of today's Wales, this is both essential and highly entertaining reading." – Mark Drakeford, First Minister of Wales 2018-2024
It was a period of Welsh politics that has become etched in the collective memory. The rise of a Welsh independence movement and the first Plaid Cymru Member of Parliament. The Labour Party searching for a way forward in a political climate that was riven with dissension and eventual rancour. It was a fight for social democracy against the centralised power of the British state.
The first battlefield was Carmarthen and the protagonists were Gwynfor Evans, the leader of Plaid Cymru and the young Labour hopeful Gwynoro Jones. Their rivalry lasted throughout the Seventies. They fought three elections and on one occasion the result was decided by just three votes.
This book tells the story of a political rivalry which was also very personal. It was a local confrontation that drew on national battlelines. It was about Carmarthen and Wales. Both men had their vision of the Wales they wanted to fight for. These pages unfold the story from Gwynoro Jones' perspective for the first time, in an attempt to redress the imbalance of Gwynfor Evans' story dominating the narrative for so long.
Drawing on an extensive archive, collected at the time, Gwynoro shows how the two fought their politics in the newspapers of the day and through speeches on constituency public platforms, where they argue about the Welsh language and devolution, Europe and agriculture. But they only ever actually met once. Gwynoro also reflects on how he views those turbulent years today.
Through their wranglings, a picture is also painted of Welsh politics in the decade that led up to the referendum on devolution in 1979, as Plaid and Labour searched for a way forward. And ultimately, a generation later, to the creation of a parliament for Wales.

Between 2016 and 2019, a unique coalition assembled within British politics. Combining Corbynite campaigners and Conservative Cabinet ministers, celebrities and grassroots activists, seasoned political veterans and novice political amateurs, this disparate assemblage of forces was brought together by one aim: stopping Brexit. What began as the unfocused, often deeply emotional belief that Britain must not leave the EU morphed, fleetingly, into a mass movement: the People's Vote campaign, a mess of organisations united by the call for a second referendum on Europe.
From the stunts of youth campaigners and the online antics of new pro-EU influencers to the million-person marches of 2019 and the launch of new centrist parties, many people, serious and unserious alike, dedicated themselves to securing a new vote. A campaign premised on telling the nation that they had gotten it catastrophically wrong was always going to be hard, and it was only made more so by parliamentary maths that never seemed to quite add up. Based on interviews with the people who were there, No Second Chances tells the dramatic, bizarre, and (at times) embarrassing story of one of recent British history's most feted roads not taken.

This book traces the dramatic stories of five of the most influential empires in medieval and late antiquity, exploring how they rose to greatness, maintained control, and ultimately declined or transformed.
Begin with The Fall of Rome, the collapse that set the stage for the medieval world. Learn how internal strife, economic decay, and barbarian invasions led to the downfall of one of history’s greatest civilizations, creating a power vacuum that reshaped Europe.
Discover The Byzantine Empire, the eastern continuation of Rome, which blended Roman governance, Orthodox Christianity, and Greek culture to become a resilient power for over a thousand years. From Justinian’s legal reforms to the fall of Constantinople, its story is one of cultural brilliance and gradual decline.
Explore the fragmented yet enduring structure of The Holy Roman Empire, a complex patchwork of territories that struggled to balance local autonomy with imperial ambition. This section reveals the ongoing conflicts between emperors and popes, as well as the empire's role in shaping central Europe.
Witness the unstoppable rise of The Mongol Empire, the largest contiguous land empire in world history. Led by Genghis Khan and his successors, it connected East and West through conquest, terror, and unexpected cultural exchange.
Finally, delve into The Rise of the Ottoman Empire, a story of transformation from a frontier beylik into a formidable Islamic empire that would eventually absorb Byzantine lands and challenge Europe for centuries.
Together, these five empires showcase the complexity, ambition, and fragility of medieval powers—and how their legacies continue to influence the world today.
