This WWII history and battlefield guide explores the significant yet lesser-known WWII combat along the Ypres-Comines Canal during the Battle of France.

Known in some accounts as the Battle of Wijtschaete, the confrontation along the Ypres-Comines Canal in 1940 is too often overlooked despite its significance. The sacrifice of the battalions on the canal was vital to the all-important retreat to Dunkirk. The four-day conflict likely saved the British Expeditionary Force from almost complete destruction.

Although there was fighting north of Ypres along the Canal Van Ieper Naar De Ijzer, the actual Battle of the Ypres-Comines Canal took place to the south. Three British brigades were pitted against three German divisions along the disused canal which runs from Comines in the south to Ypres in the north. Military historian Jerry Murland covers the order of battle of the British and German units engaged in the fighting.

With more than 150 historic and modern photographs, ten maps, visits to eight CWGC Cemeteries, plus three car tours and two walking itineraries, this volume is an essential companion for exploring the area. Visitors will no doubt wish to combine a visit to the First World War sites around Ypres with the fighting along the canal in 1940, recognizing many places that were fought over in both wars.

A Croft in the Hills captures, in simple, moving descriptions, what it was really like trying to make a living out of a hill croft near Loch Ness fifty years ago. A couple and their young daughter, fresh from city life, immerse themselves in the practicalities of looking after sheep, cattle and hens, mending fences, baking bread, and surviving the worst that Scottish winters can throw at them.Their neighbors are few, but among them they find the generosity and community spirit that has survived in the Highlands for generations. Working as a tight family unit, they learn to cope, and in time grow to love their little croft. As Neil Gunn writes in his Foreword, their lives gain extra dimensions that 'give the book its unusual quality, its brightness, and its wisdom'.

Forget about societal expectations of a woman for a moment where “women should be submissive.” Women who embrace their sexuality can be viewed as “fast or immoral.” Depending on your culture, women should not have an opinion about sex, and there is that unspoken requirement about being a virgin but still having experience. Women should have the right curves, but not too curvy, maybe skinny. Women should act, talk and look a certain way that is often defined by one’s culture: what was heard and seen. It is impossible and unrealistic to live up to the expectations of society. The pressure created for women in today’s society can be so daunting and overwhelming.
Unfortunately, or maybe not, in this gripping book of poetry, Toya did not sugar-coat her feelings to fit into the invisible box that society created for women. Toya defied all odds when she rose above her depression and physical pain, like the mythical phoenix bird. Even her very close encounter with mortality in 1996 did not prepare Toya for the dramatic sequence of events that she experienced after her injury on February 22, 2017.
Although Toya was surrounded by her doting family, she felt all alone. Her family suspected that she suffered emotional pain and tried their best to support her, but this was not enough. Toya wore her mask well as her need for companionship and sexual intimacy amplified. She struggled with her emotional rollercoaster ride as well as her embarrassment for her lustful desires. Perplexed and flabbergasted, Toya wrestled with this dangerous concoction of depression and sensual desires.
Toya resorted to writing and found escape in the underworld of her fantasy land. Toya’s excursion empowered and led her to the ultimate freedom that she sought.

Like most women, whether they’ve chosen the Fortune 500 career path or have had five kids by 35, Anna David wondered if she’d made the right choices. Then she came upon the book Sex and the Single Girl by Helen Gurley Brown, Cosmopolitan’s fearless leader from the mid-sixties to the late nineties. Immediately connecting with Gurley Brown’s unique message of self-empowerment combined with femininity, Anna vowed to use Sex as a lesson plan, venturing out of her comfort zone in the hope of overcoming the fears and insecurities that had haunted her for years. Embarking on a journey both intensely personal and undeniably universal, she becomes adventurous and spontaneous—reviving her wardrobe and apartment, taking French lessons, dashing off to Seville, and whiling nights away with men she never would have considered before. In the process, she ends up meeting the person really worth changing for: herself.

A cookbook of pescatarian, dairy-free recipes for healthy eating, inspired by macrobiotic and Mediterranean diets—includes photos.   Actress Abbie Cornish and chef Jacqueline King are best friends who bonded over their love of food and self-care. A few years ago, Abbie, a novice cook, asked Jacqueline, a graduate of the culinary program at the National Gourmet Institute, for cooking lessons. Every Sunday, they would take trips to the local farmers’ market, spend all day cooking, and then serve these dishes to their family and friends. Pescan is an extension of this tradition and all the food they explored together. Their way of eating—which they call pescan—is centered on plant-based, dairy-free dishes, but with high-protein seafood and eggs incorporated. The recipes, like Veggie Tempeh Bolognese, Artichoke Hummus with Za’atar, and Miso-Ginger Glazed Black Cod, are highly nutrient dense, incredibly energizing, and very accessible. Pescan is a collection of healthy recipes, but it’s also a story of friendship, healing, and developing a more positive relationship with food.
