Many battles fought in antiquity remain famous thousands of years later, such as Marathon, Thermopylae, and Cannae, mainly due to the belligerents involved and the ways in which the battles changed the course of history. However, even as people are fascinated by the Egyptians, one of the most important battles in antiquity has also been one of the most overlooked: the Battle of Kadesh, fought by Ramesses II against the Hittites.
For one thing, it is the earliest known pitched battle to be documented, and the number of troops deployed by both the Egyptians and Hittites may have made it the largest battle ever fought up until that point in time. The organization of the forces, especially the Egyptians, is another intriguing aspect of this battle, because the Egyptians organized their units into divisions, which may be the first such case in history or simply the first time the organization was recorded.
Arguably the most famous aspect of the battle is that it was passed down in ways that barely aligned with reality. Surrounded and swiftly outnumbered, most of the Egyptian soldiers were killed in the battle, and Ramesses II was forced to retreat in order to survive. What is known of the rest of the battle is that the pharaoh rallied his forces, fought on through the battlefield in order to evade capture and death, and managed to get away with only with a fraction of his troops, while the majority of his army lay slain on the field of battle that he left behind him.
Nonetheless, the battle essentially ended in a stalemate, after which there was a period of extended peace and eventually an alliance between the Egyptians and Hittites. The ensuing peace also helped to solidify the Late Bronze Age Near Eastern geopolitical system modern scholars often refer to as the “Great Powers Club,” during which the most powerful empires of the Near East tended to use diplomacy instead of warfare to settle their differences.

The power of Colette's work comes from its modernist storytelling.

Colette was a pioneering, groundbreaking modernist writer, but has not always had her originality and worth recognized in Britain. Her work provocatively uses unstable narratives, gaps, silences, fairytale, mythical tropes, and sensual evocations of childhood, sex, and landscapes.

In this book, Michèle Roberts examines how Colette invents new forms to express her unsettling content on desire, perversion, aging, and different forms of love. Delving into four key texts, Roberts explores Colette's willingness to break open taboos about older woman and desire, as well as hidden and forbidden aspects of human longings and pleasures.

Through these re-readings, Roberts discovers that Colette's work is even more entrancing, more disturbing, and more original than she first thought.

When Juliette Kinzie first visited Chicago in 1831, it was anything but a city. An outpost in the shadow of Fort Dearborn, it had no streets, no sidewalks, no schools, no river-spanning bridges. And with two hundred disconnected residents, it lacked any sense of community. In the decades that followed, not only did Juliette witness the city’s transition from Indian country to industrial center, but she was instrumental in its development.

Juliette is one of Chicago’s forgotten founders. Early Chicago is often presented as “a man’s city,” but women like Juliette worked to create an urban and urbane world, often within their own parlors. With The World of Juliette Kinzie, we finally get to experience the rise of Chicago from the view of one of its most important founding mothers.

Ann Durkin Keating offers a moving portrait of a trailblazing and complicated woman. Keating takes us to the corner of Cass and Michigan (now Wabash and Hubbard), Juliette’s home base. Through Juliette’s eyes, our understanding of early Chicago expands from a city of boosters and speculators to include the world that women created in and between households. We see the development of Chicago society, first inspired by cities in the East and later coming into its own midwestern ways. We also see the city become a community, as it developed its intertwined religious, social, educational, and cultural institutions. Keating draws on a wealth of sources, including hundreds of Juliette’s personal letters, allowing Juliette to tell much of her story in her own words.

The World of Juliette Kinzie offers a new perspective on Chicago’s past and is a fitting tribute to one of the first women historians in the United States.

  • The Forthcoming End of the Kali Yuga - Unravelling Cyclical Time in Ancient India - cover

Hinduism has a complex system of world ages and cycles of creation and destruction as its chief characteristics. The remarkable theory of the yugas has always played a prominent role within this elaborate system. The article explains why society is and what people should do if they want to live according to religious principles.
India’s yuga system was formed during a crucial period in its history, roughly from the 5th century B.C.E. to the 5th century C.E. The dominant Brahmana Vedic tradition had to adapt and transform to survive. It was a period of profound change in all spheres: social, political, economic, religious, and philosophical.
Several challenges that confronted the authoritative religious traditions of the Time also led to revolutionary ideas that would become syncretic new religious traditions. During this period, Buddhism and Jainism emerged, and the reworked Brahmana religion we all know today as Hinduism. It was not precisely the need to confront these profound shifts in Indian religious traditions and social conditions that provided the fertile ground for a theory of world ages.
