Summary

In "Shakespeare, Ben Jonson, Beaumont and Fletcher," Samuel Taylor Coleridge meticulously analyzes the works of these seminal figures in English literature, exploring their unique contributions to the development of drama. Coleridge employs a Romantic literary style marked by deep introspection and a vivid appreciation for the emotional depth of these playwrights. His examinations highlight the thematic complexities and innovative characterizations that distinguish these writers within the broader context of the Jacobean and Elizabethan theatrical traditions, revealing the interplay between poetic language and dramatic structure. Coleridge, a preeminent figure of the Romantic movement, was profoundly influenced by his extensive knowledge of literature and philosophy. His scholarly pursuits, particularly in the realm of Shakespearean criticism, were shaped by a desire to bridge the gap between classical and contemporary thought, fostering an appreciation for emotional authenticity in drama. The historical and cultural milieu of early 19th-century England informed his nuanced interpretations, reflecting a deep-seated respect for the artistry of his predecessors. This book is an essential read for anyone interested in the evolution of English drama and the critical perspectives surrounding its giants. Coleridge's insightful observations not only enrich the understanding of individual playwrights but also illuminate the interconnections that define their artistic legacies, making this text a vital addition to both literary scholarship and personal libraries.

    Eurotrash - Why America Must...

Why should America try to be more like countries that are worse in nearly every way?
Europe has been declining under the weight of its antiquated institutions, economic fatigue, moral anemia and cultural surrender. Yet American politicians, technocrats, academics, and pundits argue, with increasing popularity, that Americans should look across the Atlantic for solutions to the nation’s problems, including on issues like health care, the welfare state, immigration, and a bloated bureaucracy.
In Eurotrash, David Harsanyi argues we are looking in the wrong place. By every economic and societal measure, the United States is more tolerant than Europe. It is more welcoming of immigrants, but also far more successful at assimilating them. Minorities do far better in United States. Our economy is dominant. Only one European company appears in top 10 corporate powerhouses in the world and only seven in the top 50. Americans make up nearly half of the list.
Americans are far more charitable and happier than Europeans. Our slightly lower life expectancy and our slightly higher infant mortality rate are not a result of substandard care, but a statistical misunderstanding based on the fact we treat every life as one worth saving.
In this biting, fast-moving, and well-researched polemic, Harsanyi debunks prevailing notions about European supremacy and makes an unapologetic case for American exceptionalism, offering insight and reasoned arguments to counter current policy prescriptions.

The most famous church in Jerusalem for nearly 2,000 years, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, often called the Church of the Resurrection, was built in the era of St. Constantine, and the church as a structure has no history separable from the city of Jerusalem and its environs. It is venerated as being on the site where Jesus was crucified and buried, and naturally, making it a crucial pilgrimage site for Christians, and it is now the home of the Greek Orthodox Jerusalem Patriarchate. Moreover, it was the site of many important councils, some of which altered Christian history forever. In short, the Sepulchre was and is synonymous with Jerusalem, and it was essentially the nodal center of the city. Naturally, the Church has had a turbulent history just as Jerusalem has. Under the Emperor Vespasian, Jerusalem was attacked and depopulated by Roman forces in 70 A.D., and from 131-134, the Jewish revolt invited another Roman reprisal. Over and over again, Jerusalem has been decimated, sacked and razed.
The temple built by Constantine was demolished by Jewish militants in 614 under the protection of the Persian Empire. There was an earthquake in 746, and a devastating fire in 967. The temple continued to experience ups and downs that are endemic and essential to its history. In 1036, the Islamic government permitted the rebuilding of the church, and in 1048, Constantine Monomakh improved on the new structure.
Christian Crusaders would famously conquer Jerusalem at the end of the 11th century, and over the ensuing centuries, Christians and Muslims were embroiled in one of the most infamous territorial disputes of all time, viciously and relentlessly battling one another for the Holy Land. Of course, this made the Church of the Holy Sepulchre a perfect target, so much so that a powerful company of knights was founded to guard the church and defend its presence with their lives.
