  When people think of ancient Greece, images of philosophers such as Plato or Socrates often come to mind, as do great warriors like Pericles and Alexander the Great, but hundreds of years before Athens became a city, a Greek culture flourished and spread its tentacles throughout the western Mediterranean region via trade and warfare. Scholars have termed this pre-Classical Greek culture the Mycenaean culture, which existed from about 2000-1200 B.C., when Greece, along with much of the eastern Mediterranean, was thrust into a centuries long Dark Ages. Before the Mycenaean culture collapsed, it was a vital part of the late Bronze Age Mediterranean system and stood on equal footing with some of the great powers of the region, such as the Egyptians and Hittites. 
  If anything, the collapse of the Mycenaeans was a drawn-out affair, and while the early centuries of the Dark Ages might be seen as a continuation of this trend, even in the worst years, there was a degree of continuity and even some innovations. These changes including the beginnings of the use of iron as an alternative to bronze and some religious practices that continued to be observed. Furthermore, enough remained to form the basis of a recovery in economic, cultural, and artistic aspects of life in the later stage of the era, and in the political sphere, changes necessitated by the collapse in the economic system certainly paved the way for the rise of the polis 
  During the Greek Renaissance of the 8th century the Greek alphabet developed and the earliest surviving Greek literature was composed, while in terms of art and architecture, sculptures and red-figure pottery began. Warfare changed significantly as well when the hoplite became the core infantry. Put simply, none of these developments could have occurred if the basis for these changes had not been secured during what came to be known as the Greek Renaissance.

  State of the Union 1986

  The 1986 State of the Union Address delivered February 4, 1986, was delayed following the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster which killed its seven crew members. Reagan reports the U.S. is the economic miracle to which the world once again turns, with record economic growth and inflation cut from over 12 to under 4 percent.  
  But the federal budget system is broken. “We do not face large deficits because American families are undertaxed; we face those deficits because the Federal Government overspends.” “We must proceed with Grace commission reforms against waste.” Tax cuts have done more to “help America's economy break free than any program since John Kennedy's tax cut almost a quarter century ago.” 
  We “must redouble our efforts for freer and fairer trade.” We oppose legislation touted as providing protection that raises prices for us all.  
  We see a renaissance in education and support “vouchers that give parents freedom of choice”. Hundreds of billions of dollars in poverty programs have led to a breakdown of the family and deteriorating schools. As Franklin Roosevelt said, “Welfare is a narcotic, a subtle destroyer of the human spirit.” Welfare “should be judged by how many of its recipients become independent of welfare.” 
  Reagan sees technology as the solution to “the greatest problem of the 20th century. A security shield can one day render nuclear weapons obsolete and free mankind from the prison of nuclear terror.”

  Before the twentieth century ships when relied upon visual signaling, vessels beyond range of sight or a cannon shot, were blind, deaf, and dumb in the dark, making night battles at sea rare, and near always accidental. The introduction of certain technologies like the torpedo, the searchlight, radio, and then radar, transformed naval warfare by making night combat feasible and, in some cases, desirable. The process by which navies integrated these new tools of war and turned the dark into a medium for effective combat, however, was long and difficult. 
   
   
   
  Fighting in the Dark tells the story of surface naval combat at night from the Russo-Japanese War through World War II. The book is about the process of confronting and mastering problems brought on by technological change during war. It does this by examining seven periods focusing on the Imperial Russian Navy in 1904–1905, the Imperial German Navy from 1914–1918, the Royal Navy from 1916–1939, the Regia Marina from 1940–1943, the Imperial Japanese Navy in 1942, the US Navy in 1943–1944, and the Royal Navy and Royal Canadian Navy from 1943–1944.The chapters are written by authors hailing from Australia, Canada, Italy, and the United States, all recognized masters in their subject.
