Written in a frank, candid style, Pepys' entries illuminate both the extraordinary and mundane aspects of daily life, intertwining personal reflection with historical context. His unique voice and keen observations reflect the cultural and political milieu of Restoration England, making the diary not only a primary historical source but also a rich literary document, steeped in humor and introspection. One woman’s dramatic account of her stint in the U.S. Marine Corps, exploring the prejudice and mistreatment of women in combat zones. Not even old enough to drink, Corporal Savannah Cannon is a young enlisted United States Marine deployed to support Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan in 2010. As a tactical data networking specialist, she is sent away from everyone she knows and attached to a Regimental Combat Team where women are not allowed to repair communications. Her experiences over the next few months shed light on the unique and difficult positions women are placed in when supporting combat roles, while offering a raw look at the painful choices women must sometimes make. Cannon finds herself in a combat zone, ostracized from family, friends, and even her fellow Marines as the men are told to avoid her. The connections she makes are born from trauma and desperation and the choices she makes will echo throughout many lives. Corporal Cannon is not the story of a heroine; it is the hard-hitting account of just one of the flawed individuals who make up the United States’ fighting forces. Mistakes in the battlefield can have dire consequences, personally and professionally. Reflecting on her time in service, the author weaves a story of past and present, and the healing that can come with admitting our mistakes and moving past them.

    The Conduct of Life

    Ralph Waldo Emerson

Life does not unfold by design. It moves, shifts, adapts—sometimes in harmony, often in chaos. What, then, is the right way to live? With his signature clarity and quiet defiance, Ralph Waldo Emerson steps beyond theory into the pulse of everyday existence. He does not prescribe rigid formulas but instead offers something sharper: a way of seeing.
Here, work is not mere labor but an act of self-realization. Power is not control but a force that shapes character. Fate is not an iron law but a current to navigate. Love, culture, beauty, behavior—each finds its place, not as abstract ideals but as forces in motion. Emerson does not soften reality; he meets it head-on, stripping away illusions, demanding engagement.
There are no final answers, only the insistence that life must be lived with both strength and openness. This is not a manual for comfort but for those who seek meaning beyond convention, who recognize that the path is not given—it is made.
In The Conduct of Life, Emerson's exploration unfolds across these essays, each a facet of life's ever-changing design:
    I. Fate
    II. Power
    III. Wealth
    IV. Culture
    V. Behavior
    VI. Worship
    VII. Considerations by the Way
    VIII. Beauty
    IX. Illusions

Understanding how right-brain and left-brain differences influence our habits, thoughts, and actions.

Human behavior is lopsided. When cradling a newborn child, most of us cradle the infant to the left. When posing for a portrait, we tend to put our left cheek forward. When kissing a lover, we tend to tilt our head to the right. Why is our behavior so lopsided and what does this teach us about our brains? How have humans always used this information to make our images more attractive and impactful? Can knowing how left-brain right-brain differences shape our opinions, tendencies, and attitudes help us make better choices in art, architecture, advertising, or even athletics?

Side Effects delves into how lateral biases in our brains influence our everyday behavior, and how being aware of these biases can be to our advantage.

Americans have long been fascinated by the Civil War and its biggest battles, particularly Gettysburg, Antietam, and Shiloh, all of which involved Robert E. Lee or Ulysses S. Grant. But one of the 6 biggest battles of the war, and the one that took the heaviest toll by % on both armies was fought at the end of 1862 in Tennessee, and it involved neither of those generals.
In late December 1862, William Rosecrans’s Union Army of the Cumberland was contesting Middle Tennessee against Braxton Bragg’s Army of Tennessee, and for three days the two armies savaged each other as Bragg threw his army at Rosecrans in a series of desperate assaults. Bragg’s army was unable to dislodge the Union army, and he eventually withdrew his army after learning that Rosecrans was on the verge of receiving reinforcements. Though the battle was stalemated, the fact that the Union army was left in possession of the field allowed Rosecrans to declare victory and embarrassed Bragg.
Though Stones River is mostly overlooked as a Civil War battle today, it had a decisive impact on the war. The two armies had both suffered nearly 33% casualties, an astounding number in 1862 that also ensured Rosecrans would not start another offensive campaign in Tennessee until the following June. The Union victory also ensured control of Nashville, Middle Tennessee, and Kentucky for the rest of the war, prompting Lincoln to tell Rosecrans, “You gave us a hard-earned victory, which had there been a defeat instead, the nation could scarcely have lived over." The battle and its results also set into motion a chain of events that would lead to Rosecrans and Bragg facing off at the crucial battle of Chickamauga in September 1863, a battle that is often viewed as the last gasp for the Confederates’ hopes in the West.
