Summary

Migration or Adaptation explores how species respond to accelerating environmental changes, focusing on the critical choices organisms face: relocate or adapt. It delves into the biological and ecological factors determining these responses, essential insights for biodiversity conservation and ecosystem management. The book examines the challenges of long-distance migration, highlighting habitat connectivity and assisted migration, while also investigating rapid evolutionary adaptation and behavioral flexibility.

The book begins by establishing a foundation in evolutionary biology and climate science, then progresses through the mechanisms of migration and adaptation. A unique aspect of this book is its integrated approach, viewing migration and adaptation not as distinct options but as elements of a broader response. For instance, genomic analyses reveal the genetic basis of adaptation, while ecological studies highlight the factors enabling or constraining movement.

Drawing on long-term studies, experimental research, and climate modeling, the book synthesizes evidence across diverse ecosystems. It concludes by discussing implications for conservation policy, emphasizing integrated strategies that consider both migration potential and adaptation limits. This approach offers a nuanced understanding of species resilience, vital for researchers, conservation professionals, and policymakers alike.

Cars are killing people and making the planet uninhabitable. Crashes take the lives of more than a million people each year. Air pollution linked to motor vehicles contributes to even more untimely deaths. Highways and unsafe streets have devastated cities, yet traffic congestion still swallows up countless hours. And carbon emissions from transportation are a key driver of climate change, which threatens to make the world unlivable. Why do we still worship at the altar of the car? How can we find alternatives that are healthier for the planet and ourselves?

This book exposes how "Big Car"—the complex of companies in the automobile, oil, insurance, media, and concrete industries that promote and entrench car dependence—has pursued profit at the expense of the common good. David Obst explores how Big Car gained almost immeasurable influence over our lives, weighing the benefits and the costs of reliance on private automobiles. He details how industry covered up the harms of lead additives, fought against seatbelts, and continues to fund climate-change denialism. Obst considers the future of mobility, surveying how cities are experimenting with forms of transportation that offer alternatives to the dominance of cars. Provocative and comprehensive, Saving Ourselves from Big Car is a wake-up call for us to change how we use cars before it's too late.

Anderson served as third officer aboard the Eamont. Eamont was an opium clipper built in Cowes. Eamont was involved in the opening of Japan to foreigners in 1858, serving as a dispatch boat between Nagasaki and Shanghai, and was one of the first vessels to open up a trade with Formosa. The Eamont was employed in the negotiations for the first commercial treaty with Japan. On this occasion she ran into Nagasaki and quietly dropped anchor, in spite of the fact that opposition to the proposed commercial treaty was very strong at the time. On the following morning 150 boat-loads of Japanese attempted to tow her to sea, being evidently ignorant of an anchor's raison d'etre. But though they attempted several similar methods to get rid of her they refrained from any armed attack, and, eventually, her mission was completely successful. This was in 1858, and the Eamont's crew saw many wonderful sights in that tierra incognita. The September Typhoon of 1858 destroyed several well-known opium clippers at Double Island, including the Anonyma, Gazelle, Pantaloon, and Mazeppa. Eamont was anchored off Double Island, with "150 fathoms of chain out and a second anchor backed on it at 60 fathoms." The waves in the anchorage were estimated to be as large as 40 feet, and the Eamont’s crew had to cut away her masts. Eamont was one of only two ships in that anchorage to survive the night, the other being the Hazard. (See Wikipedia article on Eamont (schooner)) ( wikipedia and david wales)
