Sinopse

In "The Catiline Conspiracy," Sallust presents a meticulously crafted account of the political turmoil in late Republican Rome ignited by the machinations of Lucius Sergius Catilina. Written in a terse and evocative prose style, the work encapsulates themes of moral decay, ambition, and the battle between corrupt aristocrats and virtuous patriots. Sallust's historical narrative intertwines rhetorical sophistication with a strong moral stance, reflecting the turbulent landscape of Roman politics in the 1st century BCE. Through vivid character portrayals and incisive commentary, he exposes the failings of both individuals and the state, providing a profound critique of an era marked by ethical decline and civic strife. Sallust, a politician turned historian, drew on his experiences in the tumultuous environment of Roman politics to write this influential work. His disillusionment with the political elite and shifting allegiances profoundly shaped his perspective, imbuing his narrative with a sense of urgency and moral gravity. As one of the earliest historians to prioritize the moral dimension of history, Sallust's insights into human behavior and societal collapse remain timeless, echoing the moral dilemmas that resonate throughout history. "The Catiline Conspiracy" is essential reading for anyone seeking to understand the intricate relationship between power and morality. Sallust's keen observations and engaging style invite readers to reflect on the dangers of unchecked ambition and the complexities of governance. This seminal text not only enriches our understanding of Roman history but also offers timeless lessons relevant to contemporary political discourses.

The US media has been tainted with Russian disinformation, but the more significant threat is how the Right has embraced the Russian model of the news media as a vehicle for propaganda. This could not have happened without Donald Trump, who has been aided and abetted by politicians and news outlets that favor persuasion over information. From his inauguration onwards, Trump has shown allegiance to the Kremlin propaganda playbook—he consistently denies reality, amplifies lies, vilifies the free media, and broadcasts disinformation.

Seeing Red breaks new ground in investigating the scope of Russian disinformation, arguing that key politicians and media outlets in the United States have facilitated the dissemination of Russian propaganda. From the 2020 elections to the Capitol Insurrection to the war in Ukraine, Sarah Oates and Gordon Neil Ramsay examine the penetration of key Kremlin strategic narratives that attempt to project Russian power, blame NATO for Russian aggression, and attack democracy via the US news. Despite knowledge of the risk and resourceful work on tracking down Russian propaganda in the United States, the problem of foreign disinformation continues to this day. As Oates and Ramsay argue, this is in part due to exploitation of the American tradition of free speech and the open nature of the US media system.

    Written by Arthur Quinn
Read by Ed Quinn (with an introduction written and read by Julia Whelan)
The final book from esteemed Berkeley historian Arthur Quinn, Hell With the Fire Out is both a complex chronicle of a forgotten chapter in American Indian history and a vivid detailing of human foible, folly, and failure. With a novelistic flair, Quinn outlines the sad inevitability of America's westward expansion in its post-Civil War era. Wrangling all the inherent contradictions — Quaker Peace Policy vs Grant and Sherman's War Department; inter- and inner-tribal conflicts; the opposing attitudes of the region's White settlers — Quinn gives us a battle story not merely between nations and governments, but within the hearts of the very individuals at its center.
This is the first time an audio version of this book has been available and it is read by none other than the author's son, actor Ed Quinn (Two Broke Girls, One Day at a Time, Tyler Perry's The Oval).

    The Book Of Earths

This is a compendium of theories of the shape of the Earth, along with a great deal of 'Earth Mystery' lore. Richly illustrated, the Book of Earths includes many unusual theories, including Columbus' idea that the Earth is literally pear-shaped, modern theories that the Earth was originally tetrahedral, and so on. Kenton also covers many traditional theories including the ancient Babylonians and Egyptians, Hindu and Buddhist cosmology, and those of the Peruvians, Aztecs and Mongols. She also discusses modern alternative theories such as that of Reed and Koresh. Strangely enough, she misses or ignores the modern flat earth theory of Rowbotham. This is the only apparent omission in this definitive study. Kenton has no apparent axe to grind: this is simply a very readable survey of the literature if you have any interest in 'Earth mysteries"
