What does it mean to be a mother in an era of climate catastrophe? And what can we learn from the plants and creatures who mother at the edges of their world's unraveling? Becoming a mother in this time means bringing life into a world that appears to be coming undone. Drawing upon ecology, mythology, and her own experiences as a mother, Chelsea Steinauer-Scudder confronts what it means to "mother": to do the good work of being in service to the living world. What if we could all mother the places we live and the beings with whom we share those places? And what if they also mother us?

Steinauer-Scudder writes of the flight and aural maps of barn owls, of nursing whales, of forests, of tidal marshes, of ancient single-celled organisms, and of newly planted gardens. The creatures inhabiting these stories teach us about centering, belonging, entanglement, edgework, homemaking, and how to imagine the future. Rooted in wonder while never shying away from loss, Mother, Creature, Kin reaches toward a language of inclusive care learned from creatures living at the brink. Despair and fear will not save the world any more than they will raise our children, and while we don't know what the future holds, we know it will need mothers. As the ground shifts beneath our feet, what if we apprenticed ourselves to the creaturely mothers with whom we share this beloved home?

In the nineteenth century, Manhattan's streets were so choked with pedestrians, horses, vehicles, and vendors that a trip from City Hall to Central Park could take hours. Alfred Beach had the perfect solution: build a giant pneumatic tube underneath Broadway from the Battery to Harlem. Air pressure would shoot passengers up and down the island in clean, quiet carriages. But Beach was up against the operators of the horse-drawn streetcars and the politicians in their pay, most conspicuously William M. Tweed, the notorious "Boss" of Tammany Hall.New York's Secret Subway: The Underground Genius of Alfred Beach and the Origins of Mass Transit tells a classic story of good versus evil, pitting the mild-mannered Beach, a visionary inventor and entrepreneur, against the oafish tyrant Tweed, the exemplar of corruption in the Gilded Age. It also tells the story of one of the most astonishing feats of engineering in American history, the surreptitious creation of the nation's first operational subway. Unfortunately, political lethargy and greed would conspire to deny the city a subway for another thirty years. Yet Alfred Beach still proved conclusively the feasibility of underground railways in Manhattan, and paved the way for modern mass transportation systems. Although this true story took place more than a century ago, it will at times sound surprisingly familiar.

Dogopolis - How Dogs and Humans...

Dogopolis presents a surprising source for urban innovation in the history of three major cities: human-canine relationships.

Stroll through any American or European city today and you probably won’t get far before seeing a dog being taken for a walk. It’s expected that these domesticated animals can easily navigate sidewalks, streets, and other foundational elements of our built environment. But what if our cities were actually shaped in response to dogs more than we ever realized?

Chris Pearson’s Dogopolis boldly and convincingly asserts that human-canine relations were a crucial factor in the formation of modern urban living. Focusing on New York, London, and Paris from the early nineteenth century into the 1930s, Pearson shows that human reactions to dogs significantly remolded them and other contemporary western cities. It’s an unalterable fact that dogs—often filthy, bellicose, and sometimes off-putting—run away, spread rabies, defecate, and breed wherever they like, so as dogs became a more and more common in nineteenth-century middle-class life, cities had to respond to people’s fear of them and revulsion at their least desirable traits. The gradual integration of dogs into city life centered on disgust at dirt, fear of crime and vagrancy, and the promotion of humanitarian sentiments. On the other hand, dogs are some people’s most beloved animal companions, and human compassion and affection for pets and strays were equally powerful forces in shaping urban modernity. Dogopolis details the complex interrelations among emotions, sentiment, and the ways we manifest our feelings toward what we love—showing that together they can actually reshape society.

Splanchnology is the branch of anatomy that focuses on the study of visceral organs, which include the digestive, respiratory, urinary, and reproductive systems. These organs are primarily located within the thoracic, abdominal, and pelvic cavities, playing crucial roles in sustaining life. Understanding splanchnology is essential for medical professionals, as it provides foundational knowledge for diagnosing and treating various diseases affecting the body's internal organs.
The term "splanchnology" originates from the Greek word splanchnon, meaning "viscera" or "entrails." Historically, the study of visceral organs has been a key aspect of medical science, with ancient civilizations such as the Egyptians and Greeks making significant contributions to anatomical knowledge. The field has evolved considerably with advances in medical imaging, surgical techniques, and molecular biology, allowing for a more comprehensive understanding of organ function and pathology.
Visceral organs are classified based on their primary functions. The digestive system, comprising the stomach, intestines, liver, and pancreas, is responsible for processing and absorbing nutrients. The respiratory system, including the lungs and airways, facilitates gas exchange, supplying oxygen to the body while removing carbon dioxide. The urinary system, with the kidneys, bladder, and associated structures, is essential for waste excretion and fluid balance. The reproductive system, differing between males and females, ensures the continuation of life through reproduction. Each of these organ systems works in concert with others, maintaining homeostasis and overall health.
