  The opening years of the French and Indian War were disastrous for the British. Hindered by quarrelsome provincial councils, incompetent generals, and the redcoats' inability to adapt to wilderness warfare, Britain was losing the war. Learning that most of Britain's military resources were allocated to Louisbourg, the French launched a campaign along the weakened frontier. French Commander Louis-Joseph de Montcalm and his American Indian allies laid siege to Fort William Henry; Monro could not hold out and was forced to surrender. As part of the terms, the British regiment, colonial militia, and their camp followers would be allowed safe passage to nearby Fort Edward. The French watched in horror, however, as their Indian allies attacked the British column after it left the fort, an episode that sparked outrage and changed the tactics of the war.

  In today’s world, a new social contagion is being spread by provocateurs and social media influencers who are determined to pressure people into accepting falsehood over truth. Battle lines have been drawn on both sides of the debate regarding “Transgenderism” and the mental health effects of Gender Dysphoria. As the battle rages, First Amendments Rights of Freedom of Speech that protect people’s rights to say unpopular things without government interference, and the right to refuse to say things the government wants said, are being called into question. 
  The minority group argues that it is their right to “Self-Identify” as whatever they wish in order to accommodate their thoughts and feelings instead of accepting their bodily realities, thereby defying biological design in the process. In response, the majority fight to maintain their right to disagree with people who psychologists say suffer from mental health issues. Common sense and basic language are being challenged and unfamiliar and innovative words have been invented to define one hundred and twelve genders, as claimed by Transgender Activists. This recent phenomenon leaves society to face many provocative questions. 
  Should the thoughts and feelings of one group override another groups desire to rely on truth and biological facts? Who is oppressing whom? For the God-Conscious, what roll does our Creator play in it all?

What did 'Progress' mean? Were things (and which things) getting better? What did 'better' mean? And for whom? The history of the world before the Victorians, from Aberdeen to Africa, showed a particular form of equality for almost everyone: an equality of poverty and no prospects, with kindness often in short supply. Victorians wanted to change that world, thought they were changing it, did change it. They did it in a human way: a melange of muddle, vision, certainty, doubt, too slow for many, too fast for some. Yet their changes were decisive both for creating the modern world, but also for revealing the dilemmas attached to mass living in urban, technological societies, as well as the moral flaws in imposing one civilization's or one person's beliefs on another. Most remarkably of all, the upheaval in making major transitions in every area of life, which produced revolutions and violence across Europe, in the Americas and in Asia, was carried out – at least in Britain itself – almost entirely peacefully. The past will always be a foreign country for those unwilling to engage with its people. Whether viewing the lives of rulers or the ruled, 'Being Victorian' corrects innumerable preconceptions.
