Sinopsis

"Tactical Escape" explores the fascinating intersection of military history and Japanese comics, revealing how real-world military tactics and historical escape techniques subtly influence manga's visual storytelling. Readers will discover how stealth, evasion, and espionage strategies employed by soldiers and spies find their way into the heart-pounding chase sequences of popular manga. Interestingly, many fantastical escape scenes are inspired by actual military tactics, showcasing a unique interplay between reality and fiction.

The book bridges the gap between seemingly disparate fields, offering a fresh perspective on how military history shapes popular entertainment. It begins by introducing core concepts of military tactics before transitioning into specific manga examples, analyzing how tactical principles are visually represented. "Tactical Escape" highlights how these tactics are adapted in manga, often with creative modifications that reflect unique settings and character abilities.

By examining the cultural transmission of tactical knowledge through popular entertainment, the book provides a distinctive perspective on how societies understand conflict and survival. With its accessible approach and detailed analyses, "Tactical Escape" offers readers both practical insights into military principles and a new lens through which to appreciate the depth of manga narratives.

For a period of 85 years, the M Street/Dunbar High School was an academically elite, all-black public high school in Washington, D.C. As far back as 1899, its students came in first in citywide tests given in both black and white schools. Over this 85-year span, approximately 80 percent of M Street/Dunbar’s graduates went on to college, even though most Americans, white or black, did not attend college at all. Faculty and students were mutually respectful to one another, and disruptions in the classroom were not tolerated. Yet, in this era of best practices, this public high school, whose founders experienced slavery and segregation firsthand, has received virtually no attention in the literature or in policy considerations for inner-city education. The purpose of this study is to explore the history of a high school that was successful in teaching black children from families at all income levels to excel and to determine if the learning model employed in the past could be successful in a modern inner-city public education environment.

Read by the authors and hosts of the hit podcast Buffering the Vampire Slayer, this memoir reflects on heartbreak, perseverance, building community, and life lessons learned from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. This audiobook features bonus songs, jingles, and clips from the podcast and live shows, and contributions from fans/committed Scoobies.Kristin and Jenny’s marriage started with an ultimatum: to further their relationship, Kristin must watch Jenny's favorite show, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. With the terms set, they began a journey that has led them through seven seasons of the beloved genre show, a podcast rewatching the series with their newly minted listenership of “Scoobies,” unexpected success, and a divorce. Through it all, their love for Buffy and their commitment to their community held them together against the odds.Slayers, Every One of Us is the story of how two queer women navigated divorce on a very public level and managed to stay in each other’s lives through it all. While chock full of Buffy-related content (and Buffering!) for true fans, this is ultimately a memoir of queer love and chosen family. It's a heartwarming story for anyone who's experienced lost love, and a roadmap for staying close with your ex.A Macmillan Audio production from St. Martin’s Press.

The world's first auto-song-ography! Linn Lorkin sat at a piano so that she could read her memoir playing and singing as she went. The result is an audiobook that will make you laugh and cry ... and tap your feet. It’s the fabulously entertaining tale of a farm-girl from New Zealand, a country with no show-business culture whatsoever (at the time), who forges her own path and ends up playing and singing in some of the glittering capitals of the world. A colourful, funny, at times almost unbelievable, story – witness her first professional gig singing for prostitutes and sailors in Copenhagen and her stint in a dire Naples prison – is brought to life by this born performer’s own voice and snippets of her own songs. Prepare to fall in love with Linn Lorkin, her story and her music.

    Icon. Celebrity. Artist. Madman. Genius.

Nicolas Cage is many things, but love him, or laugh at him, there's no denying two things: you've seen one of his many films, and you certainly know his name. But who is he, really, and why has his career endured for over forty years, with more than a hundred films, and birthed a million memes?

Age of Cage is a smart, beguiling book about the films of Nicolas Cage and the actor himself, as well as a sharp-eyed examination of the changes that have taken place in Hollywood over the course of his career. Critic and journalist Keith Phipps draws a portrait of the enigmatic icon by looking at—what else?—Cage's expansive filmography.

As Phipps delights in charting Cage's films, Age of Cage also chronicles the transformation of film, as Cage's journey takes him through the world of 1980s comedies (Valley Girl, Peggy Sue Got Married, Moonstruck), to the indie films and blockbuster juggernauts of the 1990s (Wild at Heart, Leaving Las Vegas, Face/Off, Con Air), through the video-on-demand world of today.

Sweeping in scope and intimate in its profile of a fiercely passionate artist, Age of Cage is, like the man himself, surprising, insightful, funny, and one of a kind. So, snap out of it, and enjoy this appreciation of Nicolas Cage, national treasure.
