Summary

Japanese Castles explores the evolution and significance of Japan's feudal fortifications, revealing their pivotal role in military strategy and societal structure. These imposing structures, far from being mere defensive strongholds, mirrored Japan's complex social hierarchy and technological advancements. For example, castle design evolved from simple earthenworks to elaborate, multi-tiered keeps, reflecting the changing dynamics of warfare and political power during the Warring States period and under the Tokugawa shogunate.

The book examines the architectural and strategic significance of Japanese castles, highlighting key elements like moats, baileys, keeps, and gatehouses. It traces their development through different eras, demonstrating how castles transformed from symbols of regional power to emblems of centralized authority. Each chapter builds upon the last, providing a comprehensive understanding of Japanese castles within their historical context, supported by illustrations, photographs, and maps.

Japanese Castles adopts a fact-based historical approach, making it accessible to a broad audience interested in military history, Japanese history, and architectural history. It emphasizes the enduring legacy of these structures, exploring their preservation, cultural significance, and continued relevance in modern Japan. This exploration offers a unique lens through which to understand Japanese history, moving beyond traditional narratives to reveal deeper insights into the nation's past.

Russia's forests account for nearly one-fifth of the world's wooded lands. The Oak and the Larch is the first-ever English-language exploration of this vast expanse—a dazzling environmental history of Russia that offers an urgent new understanding of the nature of Russian power, and of Russia's ideas of itself.
Award-winning scholar Sophie Pinkham's magisterial account spans centuries, revealing how forests have nourished ancient Siberian indigenous societies, defended medieval Slavic settlements from Mongol invasion, and served as both an essential natural resource and a potent cultural symbol for Russia in all its incarnations. By examining the country from the forest's perspective, Pinkham pushes far beyond the contemporary political environment in Russia. She draws on literature, history, and art to connect the expanse of the Russian wilderness and the nature of Russian culture, with indelible portraits of the diverse figures who have inhabited and celebrated these forests. She confronts the forest's role in Russia's long history of imperial conquest, and in resistance to this conquest.
The Oak and the Larch offers a vision of Russia rarely seen in the west, as a land defined by its wilderness, shaped by its encounters with the frontier, and—much like our own—ultimately beholden to nature's whim.

How real is reality? Are our images of the world mere inventions or do they correspond to an external reality? Is it possible to know the truth?

These are some of the questions that are discussed in this book by physicist and philosopher Heinz von Foerster and media studies scholar Bernhard Poerksen. Together they explore the limits of our cognitive capacities; they debate the apparent objectivity of our sensual perception and the consequences of "truth terrorism"; and they talk about the relationship between knowledge and ethics, sight and insight.
    The authors:
Heinz von Foerster (1911–2002) completed his studies of physics in Vienna and worked at different research labs before emigrating to the United States in 1949. In 1957, at the University of Illinois, he established the Biological Computer Lab (BCL) – the cradle of the epistemology that would later cause a stir under the label of "constructivism." The focus was on analyzing the logical and methodological problems that in evitably arise when one seeks to know knowledge. He is the author of numerous books, including Understanding Understanding: Essays on Cybernetics and Cognition.
Bernhard Poerksen is professor of media studies at the University of Tübingen with a particular research interest in the new media age. His books about systemic thinking have been translated into many languages. In 2008 he was voted "Professor of the Year" in honor of his teaching. His most recent book publications in English include From Being to Doing: The Origins of the Biology of Cognition (with Humberto Maturana), The Unleashed Scandal: The End of Control in the Digital Age (with Hanne Detel), and Digital Fever: Taming the Big Business of Disinformation.
