Summary

Early Shell Armor unveils the surprising history of how diverse indigenous cultures transformed seashells into protective armor, offering a fresh perspective on pre-colonial warfare and armor technology. This unique form of defense reveals not only the ingenuity of these societies but also their deep understanding of material culture. For instance, the construction techniques and materials varied significantly across regions like the Pacific Islands, Mesoamerica, and coastal Africa, reflecting both environmental adaptations and cultural values.

The book meticulously examines the evolution, construction, and cultural significance of shell armor. It progresses from introducing basic types and their geographical spread to in-depth analyses of materials, techniques, and performance. A detailed cultural context explores shell armor's roles in both warfare and ceremonies, highlighting its use among elite warriors and leaders, reinforcing social hierarchies.

Ultimately, Early Shell Armor challenges Eurocentric views by demonstrating the sophistication and effectiveness of indigenous innovations, deeply interwoven with cultural identity.

From Erin Keane, editor in chief at Salon, comes a touching memoir about the search for truths in the stories families tell.In 1970, Erin Keane’s mother ran away from home for the first time. She was thirteen years old. Over the next several years, and under two assumed identities, she hitchhiked her way across America, experiencing freedom, hardship, and tragedy. At fifteen, she met a man in New York City and married him. He was thirty-six.Through a deft balance of journalistic digging, cultural criticism, and poetic reimagining, Keane pieces together the true story of her mother’s teenage years, questioning almost everything she’s been told about her parents and their relationship. Along the way, she also considers how pop culture has kept similar narratives alive in her. At stake are some of the most profound questions we can ask ourselves: What’s true? What gets remembered? Who gets to tell the stories that make us who we are?Whether it’s talking about painful family history, #MeToo, Star Wars, true crime forensics, or The Gilmore Girls, Runaway is an unforgettable look at all the different ways the stories we tell—both personal and pop cultural—create us.

  • Welfare of Future Children The: Reproductive Ethics and Disability Screening - cover

    Welfare of Future Children The:...

    Rebecca Bennett

Narrated by Rebecca Bennett, this open access practical guide to reproductive ethics navigates the complex subject of the policy around IVF treatment and disability screening based on the concerns around the welfare of future children. It focuses on 3 questions in order to examine these often complex philosophical issues:
    · Should we allow prospective parents using IVF to implant an embryo with a condition considered to be a disability?
    · Is routine screening for Down syndrome in pregnancy ethically acceptable, even if there is evidence that individuals may feel pressure to accept this screening?
    · Are we justified in attempting to evaluate the potential parenting ability of those trying to access fertility treatment (e.g. disabled people or individuals with past criminal convictions) and prevent access in some cases?
Rebecca Bennett walks the listener through different answers to these questions, exploring issues such as whether it is ever morally wrong to reproduce, whether we have a moral obligation to try and bring the ‘best’ children we can into existence and how we can assess the quality of future lives. There is, of course, no consensus about what the ‘right’ answers are to these questions, however answers are needed.
This area of policy and regulation is one that, Bennett argues, is heavily influenced by intuition, social norms and bias. The Welfare of Future Children invites us to question these norms and to come to a position on these issues that emphasises reason, transparency and accountability.
