Summary

Lacy Mitchell wasn’t looking for love in all the wrong places. She wasn’t looking for love at all. Self-sufficient and happy love was the last thing she wanted. She wasn’t looking to become involved in a murder investigation either but when you’re the one that finds the body not becoming involved is impossible. Lacy simply wanted to walk the dogs for her clients and snuggle up with her own dog Freddy while watching movies with her best friend Alex. Fate had more in mind for Lacy, however, and she soon finds herself entangled in a tangle of suspects. Is the murderer a mad man? A disgruntled family member? Or is it the building owner who was so rude to her when they first met. Can she take a chance on the man? Will the murderer be found before he kills again? Lacy has some choices to make, she just hopes her choices aren’t deadly.

Welcome to Pembroke Cove, where witches and murders are multiplying...

But when bookstore owner Lily Michaels takes a tumble and hits her head, and her cat Milo starts talking to her, she discovers she has something to hide, too. She’s a witch, and Milo is her familiar. And she’s not the only one in town. Lily has been hiding something else, too. Even though she’s always kept Gage Erikson in the friend zone, her feelings for the man Milo calls Detective Cutie go a lot deeper than she’s willing to admit.
Gage has a secret too. He’s always had a crush on Lily. But if he gives into his feelings, it might mess up the wonderful friendship they have. With his cowboy boots and cherry red pickup truck and knack for just letting folks talk, people might underestimate just how good a detective Gage actually is. But is he good enough to discover all of Lily’s secrets?
Somebody in Pembroke knows a lot about the secrets people are keeping, and isn’t above a little blackmail. While Lily struggles with learning how to be a witch, she works with Gage to uncover the truth, and a new kind of magic develops between them. Will they continue to be just friends, or will they finally admit to the secret love they’ve been hiding?

🥧 Baker and pie shop owner Penny Crust is preparing for the annual State Fair pie competition when the competition's head judge—a notoriously harsh critic with a known nut allergy—is found dead behind her bakery, face-first in a prize-winning pecan pie. The police suspect a tragic allergic reaction, but Penny notices the pecans have been deliberately contaminated and the victim's scorecards contain coded symbols about recipe theft. With her bakery temporarily closed and the baking community in a sticky situation, Penny must sift through the clues to clear her name. Assisted by her baking staff and the handsome food allergist analyzing nut contamination, Penny uncovers a scheme involving recipe espionage, ingredient substitution, and a plot to sabotage small bakeries. From suspicious shell fragments that reveal nut switching to syrup consistency that doesn't match her recipe, every slice tells a story. But when Penny discovers the victim was systematically stealing family recipes from local bakers to sell to a corporate chain, she realizes the killer is protecting culinary heritage sweeter than any blue ribbon. With the state fair judging approaching and the real recipe thief still cooking up schemes, Penny must whip together the evidence before her own bakery gets permanently iced.

Written by the author of The Scarlet Pimpernel, The Old Man in the Corner is a series of short detective stories centered in england. ""Mysteries!" he commented. "There is no such thing as a mystery in connection with any crime, provided intelligence is brought to bear upon its investigation."" and so begin Polly Burtons encounters with the mysterious old man in the corner of the ABC Cafe in Norfolk Street, who talks of murders and mysteries with such insight and always with admiration for the clever criminal. First published in 1908, these short stories, originally published seperately for Royal Magazine, are collected into a single anthology here.
    Narrated by Michael Ward.
