  When well-designed institutions function properly, people thrive. Few institutions have been more ingeniously designed than the U.S. federal government via the Constitution in 1787. This auspicious beginning more than two centuries ago helps explain why the U.S. remains a magnet for opportunity seekers, students, entrepreneurs, dissidents, and persecuted believers.Yet for decades now, America’s federal government has been underperforming. Social Security and Medicare face looming insolvency. The federal government’s “war on poverty” has failed to “end poverty” and arguably made it worse. In 2012, the United States Postal Service lost more money than the nation spent on the State Department, and Amtrak has lost money every year since being created in 1971. How can an enduring institution, so thoughtfully crafted, now produce such poor results?The federal government has grown so much because it serves a new and different vision, American Progressivism. American Progressives believed that democratically elected, public-minded federal politicians and employees could use federal programs to solve the nation’s greatest problems in a way no other American institution could. This idea justified the federal government’s massive expansion: today, the federal government runs over 1,500 programs and employs over 5% of the U.S. workforce.Yet federal results do not match Progressive expectations. Three key problems – “windfall politics”, “the government surcharge”, and “complexity failure” – overlooked by American Progressives explain the federal government’s consistent failures. American Progressive’s rosy-eyed view of human nature and political institutions have not been borne out by the evidence.In an era of substantial political fermentation and debate, rediscovering and re-applying American Republicanism represents the best path forward for the United States. The federal government should retain many necessary responsibilities but turn over those where it has failed.

Flourishing, on the other hand, is the state of thriving—living a life full of purpose, joy, and fulfillment. It represents not just the absence of difficulties but the active presence of well-being and meaning in life.

  Unsettling Choice traces the contestations that surfaced when, in the wake of the 2007–2009 Great Recession, public schools navigated austerity by expanding choice-based programs. Ujju Aggarwal argues that this strategy mobilized mechanisms rooted in market logics to recruit families with economic capital on their side, solidifying a public sphere that increasingly resembled the private. 
   
   
   
  As Unsettling Choice shows, these struggles over public schools were entrapped within neoliberal regimes that exceeded privatization and ensured exclusion even as they were couched in language of equity, diversity, care, and rights. This book tracks an architecture of expansive rights, care, and belonging built among poor and working-class parents at a Head Start center, whose critique of choice helps us understand how we might struggle for justice, and a public that remains to be won.

  The Pax Romana, meaning "Roman Peace," was a remarkable period of stability and prosperity that lasted for over two centuries. It began with the rise of Augustus, Rome’s first emperor, following the chaotic years of civil war that had plagued the late Republic. This era saw the establishment of a strong centralized government, economic growth, and the expansion of Rome’s influence across the Mediterranean and beyond. The foundations of this peace were carefully laid through political reforms, military strength, and a redefined vision of Roman leadership. 
  The aftermath of the civil wars that marked the late Republic left Rome in a state of disarray. The assassination of Julius Caesar in 44 BCE triggered a power struggle, culminating in the final confrontation between Octavian—Caesar’s adopted heir—and Mark Antony. With his victory at the Battle of Actium in 31 BCE, Octavian secured his position as the dominant ruler of Rome. In 27 BCE, he formally accepted the title of Augustus from the Senate, marking the beginning of the imperial system. This transition ended the Republic but ushered in an era of stability that would define the next two centuries. 
  Augustus carefully crafted a government that appeared to preserve Republican traditions while consolidating power in his hands. By maintaining the illusion of senatorial authority, he avoided the fate of his great-uncle, Julius Caesar. However, his rule was firmly grounded in the principles of autocracy. He reorganized the military, ensuring its loyalty through direct financial incentives, and established a standing army with permanent stations along the empire’s borders. This professionalization of the military reduced internal conflicts and safeguarded the empire from external threats.
