Summary

In "Quiet Talks on Power," S. D. Gordon presents a profound exploration of spiritual strength and divine empowerment, conveyed through a series of contemplative essays. The book weaves together personal anecdotes, scriptural references, and theological musings that resonate within the context of early 20th-century evangelical thought. Gordon's eloquent prose invites readers to reflect deeply on the nature of God's power in their lives, as well as the transformative effects of faith and prayer. The literary style is both accessible and poetic, drawing readers into a contemplative dialogue that seeks to elevate ordinary experiences into encounters with the divine. S. D. Gordon was a prominent minister and writer whose life reflected a commitment to the Christian faith and its practical implications. His experiences as a pastor and evangelist during a period marked by both social upheaval and spiritual revival profoundly influenced his writing. Gordon's emphasis on power, not as dominion but as divine presence, stems from his own journey of spirituality and the transformative lessons he gleaned from scripture. "Quiet Talks on Power" is an invaluable resource for anyone seeking to enrich their spiritual life and understand the essence of God's empowerment. It serves as both a devotional guide and a theological reflection that encourages readers to embrace their own potential through faith. Highly recommended for those yearning for deeper spiritual insights and practical applications of God's power.

American preacher Gardiner Spring spent 63 years ministering to his congregation at the Brick Presbyterian Church in New York. He initially wanted to work in law, but after his admission to the Bar, he felt called to the ministry. In this sermon, he defines human sinfulness, because “Next to just views of God, just views of the morally depraved character of man, are essential to the knowledge of divine truth.” Spring faces the issue of sin directly for the benefit of all Christian readers.

When we find ourselves at the crossroads of doubt and faith, distant from God and worried our faith is slipping away, it's hard to know where to turn.

Some books tell you why your faith still holds true, and despite your growing unease, they insist you hold on to and even find certainty in what you've been taught. This isn't one of those books. Yes, our questions hold power. But rather than destroying or weakening our faith, they build and strengthen it--one honest chat at a time.

God, Can We Chat? invites you to take Jesus at his word when he calls you to come as you are right now--a doubting believer or perhaps even a believing doubter--to experience the intimacy and rest your soul craves in the midst of fear, doubt, anger, or confusion. Rather than attempting to answer all your questions or settle ongoing theological debates, author Niki Hardy helps you see doubts not as the end of your faith but as the beginning of an honest and fearless relationship with God--the one who is not threatened by our questions and who calls us not to unwavering belief but unrelenting love.

God’s attitude toward the world is infinite love. God’s attitude toward sin is infinite hatred. God’s attitude toward His Son is unutterable love, but He gave that Son up to die for you and me. God’s attitude toward the believer is to give him eternal life, regardless of what his past has been. God’s attitude toward those who will not believe is to leave them to the perdition they so madly choose. What will you choose today: life or death? People decide that question in a few minutes; decide it for all eternity. God help you to decide it right. In addition to being saved from the power of sin, a real faith that Jesus is the Son of God involves the surrender of our life to Him. If Jesus is divine, if He is the Son of God, if He is God made manifest in the flesh, we should surrender to Him all that we are and all that we have. That is what He demands of us and has a right to demand of us. Remember, Jesus is the Son of God! Have you made a surrender of your whole life to Him? If not, will you make that surrender now?– Reuben A. TorreyAbout the AuthorReuben Archer Torrey traveled all over the world leading evangelistic tours, preaching to the unsaved. It is believed that more than one hundred thousand were saved under his preaching. Torrey married Clara Smith in 1879, with whom he had five children. In 1908, he helped start the Montrose Bible Conference in Pennsylvania, which continues today. He became dean of the Bible Institute of Los Angeles (now Biola University) in 1912, and was the pastor of the Church of the Open Door in Los Angeles from 1915 to 1924. Torrey continued speaking all over the world and holding Bible conferences. He died in Asheville, North Carolina, on October 26, 1928.
