Summary

In "The Threefold Commonwealth," Rudolf Steiner presents a visionary discourse on the societal structures necessary for a harmonious human community. Combining elements of philosophy, economics, and social science, Steiner advocates for a threefold division of societal life into spiritual, rights, and economic spheres. His literary style is marked by a blend of eloquent prose and aphoristic insights, reflecting a synthesis of his deep spiritual insights and empirical observation. Contextually, the book emerges from the tumultuous aftermath of World War I, a period when traditional social orders were being questioned and redefined, offering innovative solutions to the challenges of modernity. Rudolf Steiner, an Austrian philosopher and social reformer, is renowned for founding Anthroposophy, a philosophical movement that seeks to apply spiritual insight to practical affairs. Having observed the fragmentation of society due to political and economic upheavals, Steiner was compelled to articulate a model that upholds individual freedom while fostering social responsibility. His extensive background in education, spirituality, and the arts profoundly shaped his response to the pressing needs of his time, making this work a culmination of his life's endeavor. "The Threefold Commonwealth" is an essential read for those interested in social philosophy, spiritual science, or fresh perspectives on contemporary societal issues. It offers both profound insights and practical guidance for constructing a more equitable and holistic society—inviting readers to engage with Steiner's vision and consider its relevance in today's complex world.

Could the Caspian Region replace Russia's or the Persian Gulf's immense energy potential with their energy resources? Yunis Gurbanov explores the strategic importance of the region in post-USSR Eurasian policies of major global actors, namely China, the EU, the USA, and Russia, and examines Azerbaijan's, Kazakhstan's, and Turkmenistan's oil and gas resources as alternatives to conventional suppliers. He shows that the Caspian region's resources could serve as alternative energy sources on a global level, mitigating dependence on traditional suppliers and stabilizing energy prices.

Truly radical "Machiavellianism", in the popular sense of that word, is classically expressed in Indian literature in the Arthashastra of Kautilya (written long before the birth of Christ, ostensibly in the time of Chandragupta): compared to it, Machiavelli's The Prince is harmless.— Max Weber, Politics as a Vocation (1919)Chanakya's treatise, written while turning a farmhand into the emperor of the largest empire India had ever seen, focuses on how to manage an empire, covering everything from domestic policy and personal rights to assassination and the dirtier arts of politics. This is not, as with Plato’s Republic, a work of theory. Chanakya’s guidance is entirely practical, and is based on both his education and his experience building an empire. It lacks the philosophical ponderings and moralizing of its equivalent Western works (such as The Prince, The Republic or Leviathan) and instead focuses on how one deals with the messiness of the world in practice.People will occasionally refer to Chanakya as an Indian Machiavelli, but this does some discredit to Chanakya. The Prince is a satire, and focused around exposing the tactics and inhumanity of Cesare Borgia. Arthashastra is a manual for every aspect of statecraft, and while it deals in the unethical it does so only because that is, after all is said and done, one of the options available to a ruler. If you're after a totally pragmatic analysis of leadership, stripped of moralising and focused on what works and how to deal with real-world issues, this is the book for you.

"I had to fight all my life to survive. They were all against me, but I beat the bastards and left them in the ditch." – Ty Cobb
"Cobb is a prick. But he sure can hit. God Almighty, that man can hit." – Babe Ruth
As one of America’s oldest and most beloved sports, baseball has long been touted as the national pastime, but of all the millions of people who have played it over the last few centuries, few have influenced Major League Baseball like Ty Cobb, whose career spanned over 20 seasons. The Georgia Peach overcame early hardships to set nearly 100 MLB records in his time as a player and player-manager for the Detroit Tigers and Philadelphia Athletics. With an MVP and Triple Crown under his belt by the age of 25, Cobb went on to produce statistics that still lead MLB in several categories, including 4,065 combined runs scored and RBIs, a career batting average over .365, and at least 11 batting titles. In cases where he’s no longer the record holder, it would take decades for players like Pete Rose to play in more games and collect more at bats and hits, for Rickey Henderson to score as many runs, and for Lou Brock to steal more bases.
Even Americans who are relatively unfamiliar with baseball’s storied history have likely heard of Ty Cobb and can recognize him as one of the sport’s all time greats, but today his legacy is better known for controversy. In his day, Cobb was cast as a villain by fans of teams he played against, but he was portrayed in flattering manners shortly after his death. Things changed when other contemporary accounts came out and cast him as a vile racist, among other personal failings, much of which can be credited to the writing of sportswriter Al Stump and the modern biopic Cobb, released in 1994. It has only been recently that modern historians have pushed back a bit on those portrayals of Cobb and attempted to depict him in a more balanced light.
