Summary

In a house where time stands still, love refuses to die. When Liz and Luke move into a weathered farmhouse in rural Pennsylvania, they think they’re chasing a quiet life. But something is waiting for them—something watching. Whispers in the floorboards. Things that move. The scent of smoke that seems to linger. As Liz uncovers the tragic story of a couple lost to fire years ago, she finds herself drawn into their unfinished love story—and into a reckoning with her own haunted past. Because some ghosts don’t want to be forgotten. And some love stories never burn out. Embers is a ghost story wrapped in grief, memory, and the quiet ache of hope. For fans of atmospheric chills, small-town secrets, and romances that defy death.

Isobel Violet Hunt was born on 28th September 1862 in Durham. As a young child her family moved to London and Hunt was brought up amongst the Pre-Raphaelite circle of artists.

As a writer she was comfortable and talented enough to write across several forms including short stories, novels, memoir, and biography. Her novels are excellent examples of New Woman fiction and help illustrate her activities fighting for and promoting better rights for women.

Although she remained unmarried she had lovers as notable as Somerset Maugham, H G Wells and Ford Maddox Ford, the latter whom she lived with for a number of years.

Her collections of supernatural short stories contain much of her best work and despite her considerable talents and literary output her reputation rests both on the literary salons she held at her home in Campden Hill, where the very best of literary society attended, and for her founding of the Women Writers' Suffrage League in 1908 and her participation in the founding of International PEN in 1921.

Violet Hunt died of pneumonia at her home in Campden Hill on 16th January 1942. She was 79 and is buried at Brookwood Cemetery.

"The Shadow over Innsmouth" is a horror novella by American author H. P. Lovecraft, written in November–December 1931. It forms part of the Cthulhu Mythos, using its motif of a malign undersea civilization, and references several shared elements of the Mythos, including place-names, mythical creatures, and invocations. The Shadow over Innsmouth is the only Lovecraft story that was published in book form during his lifetime. The narrator is a student conducting an antiquarian tour of New England. He travels through the nearby decrepit seaport of Innsmouth which is suggested as a cheaper and potentially interesting next leg of his journey. There he interacts with strange people and observes disturbing events that ultimately lead to horrifying and personal revelations.
